Terminator 3 Wave Playspot: Austria, Steiermark, Graz, River Mur, Terminator Waves (aka Worlds Hole or Radetzky Wave)

What's it like

At the time of writing (January 2003) there are 3 spots in Graz: Terminator 3 (the pre-worlds-hole), the wave beside it, and the Radetzky Wave (T1) 300 meters below. In summer 2002 a huge flood washed away some rocks, so T3 and T1 aren't that good anymore. The organizers of the May 2003 Worlds plan to change T3 and the wave beside it into a huge wave, which will work during the whole year. The following description relates to the current situation. We will keep you informed if anything changes.

Terminator 3 Wave

Terminator 3: Nice sticky hole, easy to get in from surfer's right and to get out on the left side (getting out on the right side may be a bit difficult). You can do all sorts of hole moves, wheels, loops and tricky's. In low water it's very shallow, so take care of your head and shoulders. In big water (more than 330 cms) it's no problem. The spot works from 290 cms up to 400 cms. It's perfect at 320 cms and turns into a fast wave at really big water (more than 350 cms).

The wave beside T3: If T3 is bad this wave works (waterlevel: 270-320 cms), but it's easy to fall off after some moves. It is bad in big water (more than 320 cms) because you can only front surf. When there is more than 350 cms the wave behind the wave is steep and fast, with nice shoulders for blunts.

Radetzky-wave (T1): Up to 300 cms this is a small hole. At higher levels, it's a breaking wave. There is a good eddy at surfer's right. The wave doesn't get steeper in big water and there is always a foam pile. In the middle there is a small tongue where you can gather some speed. On surfer's left it's more like a hole: you can do some wheels there.

The spots are best during big water, which typically is from April to June and after heavy rainfall.

Locals

In big water: lots of board surfers at T1.

No fishermen, but lots of nice people and spectators at T3.
