WW Kayak Camps Ontario? 15 years 11 months ago #25871

Hi All,

I am going to Mtrl. Canada in early July this year. I would like to take one week off and go to the Ottawa region to paddle. I am looking for recommendations for a kayak teaching camp in the area. Here are my preconditions:

- I am comfortable in WWII and I would like to get more comfortable in WWIII and also spend some time playing on waves.

- Once at the camp it would be great to be able to ditch the car for the week and walk to the river/ wave.

- I am 28 and it would be great to be in a young, dynamic camp (not too young though).

- I cannot bring any gear (kayak and camping) whatsoever.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a good one week camp? Specifically, can anyone report on OKS (www.ottawakayak.com/) or Madawaska Paddling Co-op/School? On the cheaper side would be nice.

OKS is the best. I have paddled with them as part of the keener
(15-18yr olds) program for the past three years. They do an incredible job. Almost all of their instructors are professionals who compete and travel while not coaching. In three summers spent on the ottawa with OKS i went from not being able to roll to throwing down on buseater. I recommend OKS all the way, they will provide food, lodging and all equipment included in their adult camp.

Hey,

Thanks that sounds good. 2 questions though:

- What's the age average of the "students" there? How would I fare at a tender 28? Most people in the keener age group?

- How is the access to the river from the camp? Walkable?

ya i agree keeners is great, keeners is a teen camp but OKS just started adult keeners which is at the same time and is the exact same program. its deffinitly the best program around....and its on the ottawa which is great : ) we live right on the river next to mccoys so you can pretty much just walk right out of the houses and jump on the river. go to ottawakayak.com and it has rates and everything

Check out the programs at Liquid Skills. We enjoyed our time with the Hitchens family. The Paddler's Inn was great! Student:Instructor ratios are appropriate and they have programs for all ages and abilities. My wife and I were very fortunate to work with Joey Hitchens on the water, but their other instructors are top notch as well. Money and time well spent.
