Capetown and Zambia! 17 years 2 months ago #20626

Hi there!

I'm coming to Africa from New Zealand for a medical elective this year. I have 6 weeks in Capetown from the 19th of May to the 30 June, then 6 weeks on the East Coast near Umtata, I'm then hoping to have 2 weeks holiday in Zambia for some paddling before I return home. I'm really keen for any advice on paddling in these regions and would also love to hear from anyone who might be around these areas during this time.
Look forward to hearing from you!!
Cheers
Rach

Hi Rach,

Great to hear you will be down in the cape. You are coming down pretty much at the start of our rainy season so not the best river conditions but with a bit of luck we will have a nice wet winter:pray:

There are a few guys you can hook up with down here. PM me for contact details or any other info.

Cheers

Stuart

Zambezi may still be pretty high then but if you're lucky it would have dropped a lot. Check out some articles I've written so far:

Day 6 and 7 still to come..

Cape Town will be fun. If it doesn't rain the winter swell usually provides some epic waves and Cape Town has some super spots. I'll be living down there as of the end of this month but not sure whether I'll be on shore or not at the time. ;) Check back here closer to the time.

Otherwise my e-mail is: adriantregoning@hotmail.com

Where in Cape Town are you going to be staying?

Sounds like its going to be a great trip! 8)

First I'll be staying with the folks in Oude Westhof. Quite a lekker place I believe. Not as close to the sea as I would have liked but at least closer to the rivers! (Google it if you don't know it, they tell me its quite a new suburb) Otherwise be in Somerset West as my folks and my sister have each got a flat there that I can rent for a good price. Where are you based?

Well, hard to accurately say right now, but so far I'm making a large career change and may be sailing yachts pretty soon.. Don't want to say too much but yeah, office jobs suck. Whatever happens, Cape Town is a super place and there are enough outdoor pursuits to keep my restless soul happy! It will be a positive change. :bounce:

I stay in Somerset West. A great place to stay unless you have to travel into town(CT) early morning, but that goes for most places. We get good surf at the strand in winter and are pretty close to most rivers.

Let me know when you get down here we can hook up and have a surf/beer.

Sweet! Thanks! Some company would be sweet. Do you know the Forest Walk Development there?
www.forestwalk.co.za/

That's where the flats are. Small but new and a roof over ones head none the less.. Looks lekker and close to the beach.. Too bad I'd be further away from my favourite windsurfing beach, Sunset Beach.. :|

Hi Rach, I am an ex SA'frican paddler living in Christchurch. I have paddled extensively in the Eastern Cape and on the Zambezi. Give me a call 3370688 for advice on paddling in SA.

Nice, We keep our horses in Sir Lowrys Vilage. I stay on the Stellenbosch side of SW. Some good mountain biking around there.

Have you been windsurfing at the strand yet?? very popular with the kite-surfers in summer.

Sorry we have gone off the subject a bit Rach.:D

Re:Capetown and Zambia! 17 years 2 months ago #20638

No, not yet. But the SE is onshore at Strand so that means not much in terms of waves or wave sailing.. :| Favoured by kite surfers because the wind will blow them back to the beach should anything go wrong! hehehehe

I'll check it out though, no doubt. Yep, bit off topic.. oops ;)

Have a look at these photos that Owen Middleton took:

www.playak.com/go/OMI

The Wit is 65km from my house and the Dwars about 110km. The Wit drops around 35.6m/km or 189 feet/mile if my calculation is correct, should be... If not please correct me! :cheer: That's using elevations from Google Earth. My 1:50 000 map suggests a gradient of 41m/km. Great rivers either way.

I'll be posting some photos of these rivers without water quite soon, did some scouting missions recently. Good luck with the travels.
