I like and use the Bear Claw E.R. - Blunt Tip - Serrated Edge. Link:

Solid knife made from good quality materials. Some people will differ, as they prefer folding knives, each to their own. The Petzl folding one with the serrated edge is nice but you've got to blunt the tip yourself, and a non-locking blade can always be slightly more hazardous. I always keep my CRKT inside the PFD pocket. I've seen a knife jump out of it's sheath after a guy messed up a 16m drop and the knife disappeared. If it was on a string it could swing around and cause some damage to yourself.

Am sure this has been covered before, but could you help -

I have a folding knife, in my BA for emergencies, why would you blunt the tip of the blade?

Ta John

With a bench grinder:

Or else even a hand grinder, but be careful. Failing that, use a file. It takes longer but will do the job no problem. I took my Petzl down. If you want, I'll can take a photo of it for you, let me know.

I read a case on American WW where a guy was stabbed in the thighs badly when his mate tried to get his deck off. Whether he bled to death or drowned we will never know as an autopsy was not done, but that's another story. Either way, sharp tips can be hazardous.

Fair play hadn't thought of that - I have a Petzl too, how far have you taken the tip off? Don't want to take too much off so that it removes some cutting performance of the knife when you most need it!

Ok, this is how I did mine. It was better for eating tuna with than the CRKT...

I've got a Beaver.
17.50 euro, still sharp after some use, but nog very heavy duty.

I don't take of the tip because that's the part I most often use and i'm not really convinced it is really safer to work with a slightly duller tip.
