Sam Sutton (NZL) wins 2010 adidas Sickline Extreme Kayak World Championship.
The adidas Sickline Extreme Kayak World Championship once again took place in Austria’s beautiful Ötztal valley. 150 top kayakers from twenty-six countries had travelled to the Tyrol region in order to compete for world championship honours on one of the most difficult whitewater sections on the planet, called the “Wellerbrücke” rapids.
In contrast to the previous year, the final of top 15 at theadidas Sickline Extreme Kayak World Championship 2010 wasn’t tight, but still full of thrill and emotion. Sam Sutton from New Zealand claimed the title with a gap of 2.14 seconds ahead of Italy’s Michele Ramazza, the silver medallist (1:00.99). Third on the podium in a time of 1:01.13 was Lukas Kalkbrenner from Germany.
With an incredible 58.85 seconds race time, adidas Sickline team rider Sam Sutton was the only one in the superfinal of the top 15 paddlers to break the one-minute-barrier. New Zealand’s Mike Dawson (silver medallist 2009) and the 2008 adidas Sickline world champion Thilo Schmitt from Germany also had perfect runs under one minute in the semi finals, but couldn’t repeat their line for the last deciding race.
“It has been an awesome year and of course I am glad to finish the season becoming World Champion”, says Sam Sutton. “It’s a dream come true; ever since I have been kayaking this has been my main goal.”
