May 5 Social Instagram Joy is making a new friend on the river. All, meet Beyoncé, my attack alligator. Approaching dusk, my friend Shawna and I were still scouting for campsites, wanting to avoid the crowds in the bigger, more established campgrounds along the Black Canyon of the Colorado River. We put in late, hand-railing along, checking out caves, stopping for a long lunch on a sandy beach, and have been paddling upriver for nine miles against a 1knot current. For the last several hundred feet though, the current picked up at Ringbolt Rapids, right past Arizona Hot Springs, some nice races and boils going off. It made for a nice cardio but it was also getting late, and we just wanted to set up camp, eat, and chill. The river, fed by the Hoover Dam upstream, is flanked by the red canyon walls of Nevada to the west, and Arizona on the east. I stayed scouring the AZ side while Shawna went across to check out an NV beach. Then along comes this bad boy, floating belly up... and it was quite a sight to behold, surreal almost! (WTH is that?) He was booking it downstream, fast, but he was also too good to pass up, and so I gave a short chase, got him, and clipped a tow line on him. May 4 Social Instagram While paddling under a blue sky we heard a horn blowing loud. A while before the watch had warned us of a storm. We thought it was wrong. But it wasn't. A deep mist could be seen approaching from the east at full speed. We pushed towards #bakio which welcomed us warmly: a local kindly offered us his garage to leave the kayaks and sleep that night.
