Jul 11 Social Instagram Great photo of Norm Hann - quite possibly Canada's best all round SUP paddler, instructor and guide. If anyone knows what they are doing out there it's Norm. Look how easy the waterway is that he is on. Look what he is wearing. A lifejacket. And a leash. If the best paddler in Canada is wearing a lifejacket and a leash, don't you think you should be too? I'm troubled by the many pics that show up in social media with people on cold mountain lakes, rivers, open water, just about anywhere where the paddlers have absolutely zero safety gear. SUP is an amazingly accessible sport. Loads of fun. Super satisfying and rewarding. And like any outdoor activity, potentially dangerous. Deadly in fact. 6 people died in one weekend last summer. Every. Single. One. Related to not having a leash and or lifejacket. A very very skilled and experienced downwind competitor died. No leash. No lifejacket. A very well known Hawaiian paddler and surfer spent hours swimming off shore Maui after losing his board in downwind conditions. He was picked up by accident on the last run by a searching jet ski as the driver was returning to shore at nightfall. Anyone other than a pro surfer would certainly have drowned. You can bet there have been many other close calls. So as instructors and guides I think we need to call this out. Once again. We should not support images and adventures that set people on a dangerous path. No matter how spectacular. We need to openly remind people about leashes and lifejackets. It's not hard. It's not uncool. It means that you know what you are doing. You understand your environment. Like Norm. Or are you better than that? #Repost @blackfish_paddles (@get_repost) #gofurtherfasterhavemorefun #suptherockies #supbearfoot #badfishsup #infinitysup #boardworkssup ・・・ Don't you just love that in the Pacific Northwest that THIS is our backyard??
