Jun 7 Social Instagram #flashbackfriday As the morning came to Lock 28B a dense fog was revealed over the surface of the water, yet the skies above my tent were clear and blue. Beyond the lock the glow and warmth of sunrise separated itself from the horizon. I think it has been about a week since I’ve last seen the sunrise, as the cloudy skies of previous mornings didn’t permit it. There was a Great Blue Heron down in the drained lock chamber beside me. He was taking advantage of the shallow water that had fish trapped inside the lock. Three or four boats would pass through before my camp was disassembled and packed into my hatches. Each time the lock would undergo a fill-drain cycle the heron would let out a Jurassic squawk, fly out of the chamber, and wait for more food to be trapped. When I’m out kayaking the waterways of Oregon, Herons seem to think they are hidden from passing paddlers by standing perfectly still. The ones I encountered in NYS seems more easily excited and I can’t get within fifty yards before they stretch out there expansive wings and take to the air only do embed themselves into the wooded bank a short distance down the canal. We seem to play this game hundreds of times during the day. … #CanalwayChallenge! Jun 1 Social Instagram #flashbackfriday Paddling into a lock the heavy steel doors slowly close behind you with all sorts of loud clanging and moaning as the one hundred year old equipment comes to life. From my kayak I can’t see beyond the front of the chamber. The water slowly begins to drain, exposing zebra muscle covered walls. In the stretches of canal between locks the view isn’t so limited, from one paddle stroke to the next there is hardly a noticeable difference. But now, the doors ahead become taller and taller, my eyes adjust to the darkness and everything beyond is an unknown. One last clang fills the air and a narrow beam of light breaks through as the doors open and the world ahead welcomes me. … Before I first dipped my paddle into the waters of the Erie Canal I hadn’t done much kayaking in New York State. When I moved away at 22yrs old I hadn’t yet kayaked at all. I was already in love with being outdoors, but being a sick, asthmatic, kid I spent most of my childhood indoors, in the hospital avoiding things outside that made breathing difficult. In my late teens I started to grow out of the worst of it, stopped the daily doses of steroids, and didn’t need the tethered security of a nebulizer machine. My asthma isn’t completely gone, but it is easily managed now. Ever since then I’ve tried to make up for the lost time by exploring as much as I could. I’m not sure that moving to Oregon sparked all of it, or it just coincided with being healthier and having freedom. Still, it is the place where I first got into kayaking, building the skills and accumulating the gear to eventually shove into dry bags and fulfill the idea of heading back to New York and paddling the length of the Erie Canal.

Jun 1 Social Eric Jackson I had an Awesome Father/Daughter experience this week with the Pan Am Bass Kayak Fishing Championships! Emily and I both won our classes (Men and Women), and Emily was also 3rd overall against most of the best tournament kayak fishing anglers in the world! I have this older photo of Emily and I after we won the Reno River Festival in 2005. We have had many whitewater kayaking dual wins, but this is a first with fishing! She hung with me all week in training and we fished the same waters in the tournament as well. I am hoping she'll do more tournaments with me! GoPro Games in Colorado are this coming week, so back to whitewater competition with Emily, as well as my son-Dane, and son-in-law, Nick, and the rest of Team Jackson Kayak! I am hoping for another podium there! While I have won 5 golds there since 2005, Emily has only lost this event 2 times since then. My Son, Dane, is the hardest person for me to beat at GoPro Games, and tends to win this event a lot now.. ...
