A trimmed beam provides hull speed equal to boats a foot longer. The Northstar tracks, glides and turns with minimal effort.

We have all been taught to believe perfection is unobtainable. And yes, this is true when it comes to pancake griddles. But this is not the case with tandem canoes. How else would one describe the Northstar? We've trimmed the beam to provide the hull speed of boats a foot longer. It tracks, glides and turns with minimal effort. Loads of room for gear. And we haven't tried, but there is a rumor it even improves pancakes.

For me, the Northstar is wonderful. I like sometimes speeding along, sometimes gracefully enjoying the quiet with the dog, switching between sitting and kneeling. I have read Souris River canoes fare better in rough water and are not as tippy. Maybe I will try one someday, but for the moment I am very pleased.

About Me
Only previous canoe experience was an old aluminuim Grumman. Canoe mostly solo w/dog, sometimes tandem. Mostly canoeing on 1000 acre lake. Water can get rough at times, but mostly calm near shore.
Pros / The Good
Fast, light, sleek. An absolute pleasure to glide thru flat water. Added a third seat, so I solo in the middle seat with the dog in front. With a 260cm double paddle it is screaming fast canoe, but I get the most pleasure from my traditional paddle.
Cons / The Bad
Compared to the Grumman it is much tippier. But as I become more experienced this is less of a factor. In rougher water it is not as efficient, but my double paddle will take me anywhere I want to go.
