This run is remarkable in many ways. It is a great combo of excellent, fun whitewater without excessive hazards in a pristine setting. It is done either done by hiking up from the bottom, or at the end of Bridge Creek.

Cataract Canyon

Mt. Hood H2O (Apr 8 2025) -   BETA Stream:  There are many ways to paddle Cataract Canyon.  Most often, boaters put in 4 days upstream of the canyon and float for four days of flat water before reaching the first whitewater (can be reduced with a motor or night floating in rafts).  We did the run in packrafts, hiking in to "The Loops" area on the Colorado from The Needles District.  Our first day involved a 4 mile hike and a couple hours of flat water floating to our camp at Spanish Bottom. Day 0:  We set shuttle and camped somewhat close to the start of the hike at Hamburger Rock. Day 1:  We drove a 4WD road that starts behind the visitor center in the Needles District for awhile.  Once we deemed the road more rough than we wanted to subject our vehicle to, we parked and hik...  read more...

Baldface Creek

Mt. Hood H2O (Mar 10 2025) -   " I do believe this is the best class 3/4 wilderness run I have ever done to date."                -Joseph Hatcher                                         BETA Stream:  The logistics for this run can be tricky, so it is rare for non-locals to get on, but keep it on your radar because if the conditions align it is a bucket-list run. This run is more commonly done as a very long day trip by starting the hike before the sun comes up, but to really enjoy the run I highly recommend doing it as a 2, or even 3-day trip. The first part of logistics is the shuttle, the take out is the town of Gasquet, and the shuttle takes paddlers up Patrick Creek and into Oregon.  A gate is often closed 7 miles from the put in, ...  read more...

Whitewater Kayak Overnight Gear List

Mt. Hood H2O (Jan 24 2023) - This is what I pack for a 2 day kayak trip in Oregon during the times of year rivers are fed by rain.  That is usually long enough for me with damp camping gear.    read more...

South Fork San Juaquin: Blayney Meadows to Florence Reservoir

Mt. Hood H2O (Apr 4 2022) - We were on another June California trip, looking for another class IV trip in the High Sierra's. Granite Creek had been just what we were looking for a couple years prior, and we hoped for more of the same.  read more...

WFNF Wilson

Mt. Hood H2O (Mar 28 2022) - This creek was an adventure Pete Giordano and I went on just before the pandemic arrived. Snow levels had been high the day before, yet while we were running shuttle that started to change, we were thankful my dad would be running shuttle to keep us from stressing about if the put in vehicle would be snowed in by the end of the day.  read more...
