Aug 2 Social Whitewater SUP So, Ken Hoeve and Brittany Parker, you have both recently posted about long hold downs in big water. Maybe this kind of water calls for a higher float PFD. I use an ICF race standard PFD, because, well.. it's what I've got. it has pretty minimal buoyancy. Most of us are in some form of kayaking PFD, they are cut short to make room for the skirt and to stay above the cockpit rim. We don't need that in Sup. In fact we would benefit from some extra coverage in many cases. I've been thinking of a few options, A) a 'full time' high-float PFD. B) an 'Airbag' mechanism in a regular PFD like an (avalanche pack) that is either pressure triggered or manually triggered for the occasional big hold down. C) and I like this one a lot, a medium to high float PFD that has an extra chamber that you can blow up before big drops, but then fold away again the rest of the day so it's not too cumbersome except when you need it.
