West Glamorgan, Swansea, River Tawe, Morriston Weirs
Spot: Wales, West Glamorgan, Swansea, River Tawe, Morriston Weirs. |
What's it like
There are three weirs in a row, all very different.
The top weir can be catchy in low water, but in high water it is the most perfect surf wave in Wales.
The second one is a rocky weir with a powerful low drop which doubles as a fast hairy surf-hole.
The third one which is the most popular. It is a safe and enjoyable play hole and surf wave on medium water levels. Safe because after the initial deep hole it becomes very shallow with many eddies on both banks - the more water the more fun. Even in low water it can provide something to keep you interested.
There is year round access from the third weir down as it is tidal, but can get popular with fishermen and kids during low water in the summer.
How to get there
Off the M4 junction 45 head towards Morriston, down an underpass and you'll see fairground caravans. Down the side are the weirs; access can be seen from the same view.
Locals
Fishermen and usually OK kids messing around. Generally well behaved passing walkers and cyclists who stop and stare then move on.
