Southern Cape, Kaaimans River, Pepsi Pools
Waterfall: South Africa, Southern Cape, George, Saasveld, Kaaimans River, Pepsi Pools |
What's it like
A high gradient, narrow creek. Highlight is the 3-in-1 drop at Pepsi pools. It’s made up of a 2 meter drop into a 3 x 3meter pool followed by a 3 meter shoot into another tiny pool which feeds into a another drop of about 3.5 meters. This final drop can be freewheeled as it falls into a large deep pool. The 2 pools above are very shallow and care should be taken not to pencil these. (Toes and feet have been sacrificed by unwary boaters!).
The rest of the river is made up of steep shoots and tight pourovers. Elbow pads aren’t a bad idea for folks who moisturize…
It’s best to paddle this and other Southern Cape rivers in winter; June- October when the rainy season fills the small catchment areas.
How to get there
From Knysna turn right to Saasveld as you get into George. From Cape Town turn drive around George on the N3, then take the offramp to Wilderness. Then follow directions to Knysna. Follow Saasveld Road for about 9 km, then turn left into Saasveld. Permission is required and can be obtained at the Admin Block. Then continue for 3 km to Tierkop. Continue straight along the forestry road for about 4 km, this will take you directly to Pepsi Pools.
Locals
Only students and hikers might be found here. Both species tend to be harmless but aggressive students can be calmed with beer.
