Has anybody seen one of these before? It was one of the pictures in the random gallery on boatertalk, and looks like a good alternative to buying another skirt to get an implosion bar.

looks like bad news bears to me, no only are you compromising the integrity of your cockpit rim by drilling and putting bolts through it, but the amount of pressure it would take to blow a skirt anyways would be pushing down on that strap which means its pulling in on those bolts roughly 50 times stronger... just my thoughts. If you're looking for a cheap, easy solution try a beach ball

That appears to be a big downside, since it could weaken the integrity of the boat. I was just wondering if there are any reviews of it, and how much it costs/used to cost. I'm not paddling much whitewater now, and when spring comes around, I will be paddling class III/IV at the highest. Also, it could impair your exit, but if anyone has experience with this, please post.

Looks more of a home made job, so would be hard finding reviews I would have thought, and like Batayak said, your ompromising the strength of your boat drilling holes into it, and also as stated, you will then have all that pressure forced onto that belt, which would bend the boat slightly, so over time it will really weaken the hull.

I would spend your money buying a good deck that stays on your boat.

In the UK PeakUK, Playboater and Palm are good brands and in the USA Snap Dragon. Don't get one with a strap across the middle.

Make sure it's the right size for the cockpit rim, make sure that you have airbags in your boat and then test it by hitting it as hard as you can in the middle when your sittiing in your boat. If it stays on when it's dry it will stay on when it's wet and more strechy.

If your deck has blown once it will blow again change either your boat or your deck or both (and get some airbags).

Hope this helps,

I've been very happy with my Palm decks, as well as Snap Dragon. I've never blown a deck in the surf and sometimes when the lip lands on me it flattens my deck right down and slaps me on the balls... :woohoo: A little painful sometimes. The implosion bar on the Snap Dragon is pretty cool and it's super rigid. Hit some surf this afternoon (see below) and once again no worries. I've seen people burst decks on waves with a 1m face. Swimming is not cool... Get a good deck that fits well. Your life may depend on it on the river.

I already have float bags and an IR Shockwave skirt. If I ever were to get a new skirt, I would probably try to get a custom IR SBD with an implosion bar. The nice thing about IR is that they can make nearly everything custom, as seen by some of the news links like this. The only bad thing about the double tunnel skirt is that it would be easy to hit the person in front in the side of the head. They also have drydecks made to order.
