I got a question for you...

I have surf kayaked in playboats, but never in a surf kayak with fins.

I just recently got one.

What is the best way to get into the waves with out breaking your fins.

I am going to be using 4WFS, and I am concerned about sitting in the boat on the fins, just before you paddle out.

Any suggestions would be great and much appreciated.

Thanks!

Hello WakaWai,

Don't worry about the fins problem. We all have that fear at the beginning but you just have to be very careful with rocks or hard samble. Avoid to come with your surfkayak paralel to the beach when you leave.

I'm sure that you'll see that those fins aren't so fragile as they appear to be but, if anything happens, better to crack the fin than the boat!!

Cheers,

luis pedro

My mate has been paddling his Fluid Element with the 4WFS system and he has some very large fins on. He just pushes off on the sand and away he goes. Most times it is better to exit the boat before coming in, especially if the shore break is big or, as shown below, there are ROCKS then it's a no go. A sideways force could will damage the fins....watch out.

The photos below were of a mate of mine demoing my boat. (That was two days before my surgery so I couldn't paddle! What a shame!) Luckily I didn't have any fins otherwise they would have been ripped off. He did two eskimo rolls across the rocks coming out bleeding with some bruised ribs and a battered boat but it's still good to go! I've got a full sequence of the carnage.. :woohoo: The swell was 6.4m at 15 seconds that day...
