The red lines show you the functionings of the different parts of the blade. The outer part of the blade is constructed to let the water disperse. That way you need only minimal effort to position your paddel in the water.
Dipped in deeper, the grooving orthogonal to the longitudinal axis puts all your energy on the water.
The blades are lightly upstream relative to the longitudinal axis. This construcion sustains the normal paddle stroke and minimizes the effort needed to keep the blade in position.
The longitudinal grooving makes the blade stiff and provides grip in the water.
