Playak Weekly Digest - week 44, 2019
Playak Weekly Digest
The world's top paddling news in week 44, 2019.
Palm Blogs Destination Guide: Zambezi River
Palm Blogs - The Zambezi is probably the best big volume class 3-4 run in the world. Yes I did say class 3-4. I know everyone has seen all the photos and videos of Number 9 and the Minus Rapids and thinks the Zambezi is nothing but full on class 5. Aside from Number 9 (which is the easiest portage in the world) the normal rafting run is class 3-4. In high water Number 7 is 4+ but easy to walk around if you don’t fancy it.
Jackson Kayak Learning to repair gaskets and fix your dry tops
Jackson Kayak - Repairing Gaskets is an easy and useful skill to know. In most circumstances, sending your dry tops off to be fixed by someone else, as it is expensive and time consuming. You can buy the supplies online through Immersion Research or any other kayak outfitter.
unsponsored Paddler’s Guide to The Tyne Tour
unsponsored - The Tyne Tour is one of the best kayak/canoe events in the UK. Since its origins as the Mike Jones Rally the Tyne tour has become a firm favourite of mine.
Tony Paradise Paddling in the Lun
Tony Paradise - Sunday the forecast was windy; 17 knots west gusting to 23 knots. We are blessed with outstanding ocean scenery but cursed by topography. The prevailing winds are SW and W and with many of the bays facing east, it leaves few options. One I considered was a paddle along the east side of Bell Island. So, Sunday Jenn and I caught the 12:10 ferry to Bell Island from Portugal Cove. A short ride to the nearby beach and we were at the put in.
Jackson Kayak LKO 2019 in Sweden
Jackson Kayak - Some weeks ago it was time for the Liska Kayak Open, so I traveled to Karlskrona in Sweden to meet many friends from all over europe. It is always a pleasure to meet the other kayak-fishing-guys.
Kayak Session Inside the 2019 Green Race #2, The energy in the Gorge is Infectious
Kayak Session - The Green Race is less than a week away! We have been graced with a couple of inches of rain in the last week and things are looking good for fluffy levels on the river and calmer nerves entering Gorilla.
Werner Immersed in My Surroundings
Werner - It is a crisp afternoon at the beginning of fall. The trees are just starting to lose their leaves, to turn from shades of green to yellows and orange, and the water has changed to gray from the greens and blues of summer. A perfect day for paddling, with little rips and eddies along the shore and the main flow of the larger current out towards the middle of the channel. The Tacoma Narrows is one of my favorite places to paddle in south Puget Sound, and it’s literally right out my back door.
Jackson Kayak Learning how to be an efficient whitewater kayaking instructor
Jackson Kayak - I was recently lucky enough to participate in the 2019 Instructor Course put on by the University of Puget Sound kayak club. The 3-day course offers students the opportunity to progress not only their personal skill as a paddler, but also their skill and comfort instructing a wide range of skill levels on the water.
Palm Blogs Warm, warmer, warmest – new neoprene accessories
Palm Blogs - In time for autumn we’ve completely updated our line of neoprene accessories: and added new surf hoods, NeoFlex gloves and fingerless gloves to the mix. They’re made from more environmentally friendly oil-free limestone neoprene.
Newfoundland Kayakoholic 2019 - Post 16 - St. Philips to Portugal Cove
Newfoundland Kayakoholic - Hazen put together a quick little paddle for last Saturday (October 19). It did my kayaking soul good when I seen that ten of us showed up on relatively short notice.
Naish Casper Steinfath Training for Red Bull Heavy Water 2019 in Maui
Naish - After taking wins at the APP World Tour Stops in New York and Japan, Casper Steinfath decided he needed a little warm water time to train to defend his title at the 2019 Red Bull Heavy Water. So he jumped on a plane to link up with Robby Naish and a bevy of other legendary athletes as he prepares for the gnarliest race in SUP.
SUP Connect Introducing North Shore Up-and-Comer Zane Saenz
SUP Connect - Meet 15-year-old Zane Saenz from the North Shore Oahu, Hawaii. Zane is a stand up paddle surfer, foiler, and racer who is working his way up the ranks of the professional surf scene looking to make a name for himself on the global stage.

Frogma A Hudson river Canoe Paddle Voyage captured in this book - RIver
Frogma - It's not actually a book about me (in fact, Cooper used his daughters as his models, which I think is pretty cool). But it's about as close to my heart as any book we've published, in the just under 2 decades I've worked for Scholastic, has been - because I paddled part of the voyage that Cooper's strong and competent main character travels, and that trip was one of the best things I have ever done for myself.
SUP Tonic Derek Hama Taking Foiling to the Next Level, Welcome to the Blue Planet Team
SUP Tonic - Derek Hama joins Blue Planet Surf, Riding his Blue Planet paddles and has been loving his Blue Planet Kai Zen V2 paddle. We are stoked to see Derek pushing the limits of SUP Foiling on his tiny Jimmy Lewis foil board.
