Playak News Flash - December 24, 2016
The world's latest paddling headlines.
Jackson Kayak How they organised and made popular a White Water Fest in Russia.
Jackson Kayak - Okulovka Kayak Contest, whitewater kayking fest in Russia. Here you can read how the Organzers made the Fest popular in Russia where kayaking is a young sport. It had good line of events and activities for novices and experienced kayakers and there were cash prizes too for complex events like kayak cross and freestyle. The festival ran from Friday to Sunday.
Team Pyranha Whitewater run at the rapids of Meghalaya
Team Pyranha - It’s been an absolutely awesome season out here in Meghalaya. A few of us headed out in July, a month or two before the conventional season kicked off, to see what gems were hiding in the monsoon months.During the rainiest part of this year’s relatively weak monsoon we headed to the Jantia Hills, home to Meghalaya’s steep bedrock creeking. We paddled some great new sections and found a lot of massive rapids and drops that needed a bit more water and the next generation of chargers to come and throw themselves off.
Jackson Kayak Understand how to attract your fish with Spinner Baits
Jackson Kayak - You may not find what you’re looking for in the aisles of your tackle store. To catch bass consistently you have to make adjustments. If a bait doesn’t exist to match the conditions you can be amateur lure designer. The best bet for a bait make over, spinner baits. To put a positive spin on spinnerbaits you must first understand the performance of the bait and blades.
NRS Duct Tape Diaries After monsoons Wilson River in Northern Oregon becomes a great river to raft
NRS Duct Tape Diaries - When storm brings rains then Wilson River begins to swell. Waves form on it over the mid-stream boulders and it becomes a great river for rafting. For the past three years I have haphazardly tried to raft the Wilson River, but it’s tricky. It’s not the access nor the rapids that are too difficult, it’s the flow that’s temperamental. It only runs after a few days of heavy rain. Too much and it turns into continuous Class III-IV—beyond my league.
Loco SUP Loco SUP Surfing South West Portugal
Loco SUP - After a random Police stop we ended up there a bit later than planned, but my word what a beautiful location. A small protected bay with picture postcard views and a cheeky chest to head high peeler predictably rolling in. No sign of Tina so assumed she must already be in so it was wetsuit on and straight in. The water was much warmer than expected for the time of year so I could have opted for shorts and a rashie really but there were waves to catch so there was zero chance of me getting out to regulate my temperature. Bring on the dehydration!!

Tony Paradise - On the 10th last day of 2016 I'm counting down my top ten paddles of 2016. Today, number 10, a paddle from Middle Cove to Flatrock return on June 25th.

Gary Engberg Outdoors Great news - Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness legally protected from mining impacts
Gary Engberg Outdoors - Public lands sportsmen today applauded the denial of federal mineral leases in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness watershed, a decision that removes a grave threat to the nation’s most-visited wilderness, ensures the continuation of the region’s hunting and fishing traditions, and safeguards the fish and wildlife populations that call the area home. The BWCAW encompasses more than 1 million acres of pristine fresh water and forests and provides opportunities to hunt, fish, canoe, hike and camp ...
SUP Connect SUP Tail Design Explained
SUP Connect - Have you ever wondered why the tail of your paddle board is flat and square while the ones down the beach have rounded tails? There is a reason for the different tail shapes, and it’s not just cosmetic. A SUP’s tail shape is integrally tied to how the board is designed to perform. So if you’re shopping for a new paddle board, it is worth paying attention to the shape of the tail.

The BWCA is a famously remote fishing, paddling and boating destination carved by glaciers and covered in thick forest in the northern reaches of Minnesota, along the Canadian border. This is their story, straight from Salm’s travel journal and originally published in our 2016 Gear Guide.
