Following on the heels of the highly entertaining Brothers on the Bashkaus and the renowned self-help instructional manual Outdoor Parents, Outdoor Kids, comes the newly released Ultimate Canoe and Kayak Adventures, by PaddlingLife.net founder and editor Eugene Buchanan.
Marking the third full-length book by the former editor of Paddler magazine and contributing editor to Canoe & Kayak magazine, Buchanan brings to life 100 of the best places to paddle in the world in this new work published by Wiley Nautical (Fernhurst Books Limited) last fall.
Ultimate Canoe and Kayak Adventures: 100 Extraordinary Paddling Experiences (co-authored by Jason Smith and James Weir) is available in paperback and e-book for $34.95. The stunningly illustrated compilation of canoeing and kayaking hot spots around the globe offers something for everyone -- from the whitewater junkie to the extreme sea kayaker.
Adventures cover every sort of paddling from mountain chasms, gentle rivers and lakes, crashing surf, dramatic coasts and the oceans beyond. Paddle from the frozen wastes of Alaska to the tropical rivers of South America. Explore the rivers and seas of Europe and visit the stunning waters of the Far East and Australasia. Striking full-page color pictures are matched with lively descriptions; there's also information telling you how, where and when to try each one for yourself.
A member of New York's Explorer's Club, Buchanan's works have appeared in Men's Journal, National Geographic Adventure, Outside, Sports Afield, Skiing and other publications. Jason Smith is editor of Canoe & Kayak UK, Britain's best-selling paddlesports magazine. Smith is an active paddler and challenges the huge rapids of some of the world's biggest whitewater rivers. James Weir explores and competes all over the world and he has represented Great Britain in whitewater canoeing and currently represents Switzerland.
"Being able to compile 30-some years of personal paddling adventures into one book was a blast for me," Buchanan said from his home base in Steamboat Springs, Colo. "Working with Jason [Smith] and James [Weir] was a real honor and I think together the three of us really nailed it."
Brothers on the Bashkaus: A Siberian Paddling Adventure (2007, fulcrumbooks.com) is a story of Buchanan's trip to Russia with four other American adventurers as part of the first-ever W.L. Gore Shipton/Tilman Grant applied to a river expedition, in 1994.
"Being able to share some of the experiences I've had, both in extreme adventures, and also raising my two girls as adventurers themselves, is the most rewarding part about doing these books," Buchanan said.
