We started the Arch Rival series in 2013 with the goal of making affordable dry tops and suits that were simple but remarkably durable. And by “durable” we mean able to stay dry for season after season of whitewater paddling- perhaps the worst environment in the world for waterproof breathable fabric. The interior of a dry suit while it’s being used is sweaty, acidic, usually full of bacteria and or mold, and the fabric is under constant stress with 10’s of thousands of fabric-flexing rotations in the armpit alone in a single day of paddling. The first step to addressing this choosing the right laminate. The stuff we use is called “WhiteOut”- a proprietary PU based waterproof/breathable mid layer that we developed after 10 years of hard earned lessons about what works and doesn’t work in paddlesports dry wear. The result is a barrier that will not crack or mildew or peel off the outer shell fabric or start todisintegrate even after years and years of abuse (and proper care). In 2013 we first released the Arch Rival garments and the idea was simple- a basic, heavy duty breathable product that was affordable and could stand up to the horrible abuses suffered by whitewater drywear for many, many seasons. We love the laminate that we developed for these garments- we called it “WhiteOut”- and we’re still using it today across our entire drywear line. Its breathable, seemingly impervious to damage caused by the sweaty, twisting, flexing bacteria-filled environment inside a paddler’s drysuit or dry top, and it sticks to a wide variety of shell fabrics like gum on a shag carpet. The shell fabric we chose for the original Arch Rivals was a 200 denier nylon oxford that was inexpensive, strong and bonded really well with laminates. These simple suits developed a bit of a cult following- even amongst our team athletes. Dave Fusilli used an Arch Rival suit for 2 years and called it the driest suit he ever had. Chris Gragtmans go-to suit continues to be the Arch Rival, and most recently Graham Seiler has been putting his Arch Rival OX suit to the test in Hood River and is loving it. So...

When we started showing the early versions of the 7Figure suit this past summer, the number one question we got was “what does 7Figure mean?” That’s not super important. But the second most common question was a good one: “What’s the difference between the 7Figure and the Arch Rival?” Lets start by talking about whats the same- the laminate. The 7Figure is a kept waterproof and breathable by our proprietary WhiteOut PU mid layer. This laminate is the result of 1o years experience in the paddling drywear trenches learning hard-earned lessons on what works and doesn’t work for the incredibly harsh environment inside a typical paddlers drysuit. Over the past 10 years we’ve spent a lot time thinking about dry suits- we’ve made a bunch of them and they are a tremendous amount of work. During a typical design phase we spend hundreds of hours working on patterns and sourcing materials. In preparation for production we often hand-make dozens of samples for our athletes to test, with each suit taking days to make. During production we spend weeks in the factory overseeing each and every step of the manufacturing process, and then after they are done, we have a chance to see our suits come back for repairs, along with suits from every other manufacturer in the business. To say that it’s almost an obsession with us would be true- and it should be. Making kayaking gear is IR’s sole focus, and the drysuit is the ultimate piece of paddling gear. In 2010 we set out to design a basic, durable and breathable dry suit that would not only handle the worst conditions found in paddlesports but also still be affordable. This deceptively simple project resulted in 2 solid years of fabric testing, pattern making and prototyping before we arrived at the finished product: the Arch Rival dry suit. The shell is a mix of heavy duty 410 denier pack cloth in high-wear areas and 70 denier taffeta where more flexibility is needed. The laminate is our proprietary 3 layer WhiteOut™ waterproof breathable barrier specifically designed to handle the hellacious conditions created by active, sweaty conditions found inside a dry suit. The suit has latex booties instead of fabric socks because they are more durable, easy to replace and you can patch them in the field with Aqua Seal. Both the front main zip and relief zip are our standard flexible T-Zip zippers. Every single seam is designed for ease of taping, and every cross-seam is hot pressed.
