SIERRA magazine and the Sierra Club are staunch supporters of the paddlesports industry by publishing the Annual Paddling Issue, completely devoted to paddlesports of all kinds. This May/June issue once again features the Annual Paddling Section, written by Darren Bush of RUTABAGA—the largest paddlesport retailer in the United States—about a paddling adventure with his dog, Grace, on the Wisconsin River. SIERRA’s Fourth Annual Paddlesport Contest entices readers with the prospect of winning a Pygmy wooden kayak kit, Ex Officio adventure clothing, or a paddling getaway to Morro Bay, California. Put your oar in the water for this one.

• Speaking of getaways, check out this lineup of waterway escapes. If you think Walden Pond is transcendental, read “In Thoreau’s Wake,” the featured paddling adventure through Maine’s North Woods written by Steve Jermanok.
• Pulitzer Prize-winning author John McPhee shares the art of canoe dunking in “Swimming with Canoes.”
• Montana anglers scout a recovering river during a ground breaking 320-mile trout fishing trip down the Clark Fork River, one free-floating mile at a time in “The Longest Haul” by Brian Kevin.
• And brace yourself for a photo essay, “Against the Flow,” a bouncy ride of a river-surfing evangelist, Elijah Mack.
• In “Cattail Commute” by Jeff Galbraith, publisher of the Flyfish Journal, Galbraith shoots at the stereotype of blue-collar industrial workers having disregard for environmental concerns as he highlights that they are also outdoorsmen who hunt, fish, hike, and do their part to protect the natural places they love in a special article funded by the Sierra Club’s Outreach to Industrial Workers program.
• “Enjoy The Green Life” and take a stab at some tasty fake meat as suggested by a panel of professional carnivores. Grow a conscience and a garden with earth-friendly gardening gizmos. And catch up with actress, Alicia Silverstone, while she is on tour for her new book The Kind Diet, with a longer interview on sierraclub.org/greenlife.

You will find this and much more from our other exciting departments Escape, Explore, Innovate, Ponder, Act, Survive and Mixed Media, showcasing what to read and where to click if you want to learn all about the politics of water.

SIERRA’s May/June issue will whet your appetite to join one of Sierra Club Outings’ Domestic Open and Selected Foreign Adventure Travel trips that include literally dozens of paddling opportunities in canoes, rafts and kayaks in the United States and around the world.

SIERRA magazine is the publication of the Sierra Club and is the exclusive media sponsor of Canoecopia — the largest paddle sports expo in the U.S.— and are members of the American Canoe Association, Paddlesports Industry Association and Outdoor Industry Association (OIA).
SIERRA is involved in the creation of the new OIA Paddle Advisory Council.

Sierra Club’s Water Sentinels program has donated more than 150,000 fishing poles to kids in the past 18 months, ensuring the next generation of anglers. Most importantly, during the past 100 years, Sierra Club has protected 11,000 miles of wild and scenic rivers and has taken thousands of paddlers out on the water in all levels and types of water sports recreation. Join the more than one million SIERRA readers who find features and departments that inspire them to get outdoors, whether on land or water.
