Kenyan Virgin Waters Expedition 2001

Whilst mooching around Kenya we came across a number of rivers that have never been run and we are mounting an exploratory trip this year to have a go at as many as possible...

Last summer I went out to Kenya paddling with my good friend James Savage, whose Dad owns Savage Wilderness Safaris, Whitewater Adventures. These guys are pretty much the only commercial rafting company in Kenya and are an excellent place to start on your travels if you want anything away from the usual tourist haunts.

Whilst mooching around Kenya we came across a number of rivers that have never been run and we are mounting an exploratory trip this year to have a go at as many as possible. This year's group is slightly different and consists of myself, Kris Collyer 23, a BCU level three coach who has been paddling for several years in the UK and recently Africa. James Savage 20, A Kenyan resident who has been ripping up the local rivers as a raft guide since the age of 16, and kayaking on the rivers from the age of 13. Mark Thompson 22 a BCU level two coach from the deep south of Englandshire whose been boating for around 10 years.

There are at present three commercially run rivers in Kenya. The Tana ( check out the river guide), the Athi, and parts of the Mathioya. Some of the new rivers we plan to run come off Mt Kenya and the Aberdares, along with some in western Kenya. The rivers vary from steep creeks to big volume African monsters. All of them are pretty serious and we will be using raft support on some of the trips. The group departs on the 5th of June and returns on the 2nd of October. James and myself will also be going up to the Nile in Uganda, to do a three week work placement with Adrift. The group are also thinking of attending the next Zambezi big water event depending on the financial situation.

You can catch regular updates throughout the summer on PLAYAK.COM where there may even be some pictures and video footage if we can get the technology to work.
