Hordaland, Vosso, Bulken

Playspot: Norway, Hordaland, Vosso, Bulken

What's it like

Big, green, beautiful, glassy wave with a playhole in the middle:

The wave is formed by an artificial ledge built across the entire river exit from the lake, primarily to prevent flooding further down the valley.

In low water this ledge forms a nasty, big hole (consider this a warning!).

High water levels: the hole will dis- and a wave appear. Best chances are in spring (May-June) and autumn (September-October).  When the water level is too high to have fun on the creeks in the Voss area, the wave is there!!

If the water level goes to somewhere near flood stage, the whole thing will flatten out. This hardly ever happens though.

How to get there

From Voss drive 5 minutes in the direction of Bergen. The wave appears where the Vangsvatnet Lake stops. The road number is E16. The road runs from the city of Bergen to Voss and then further in to the country. Be aware of automatic speed trap cameras if you come this way from Bergen! Exit the road where the signs read "Bulken" and "Hamlagrø". The wave is then clearly visible from the road. There's a bridge here and you can park on either side of the river, but the best option is river right, somewhere close to the bus stop. Basically, you can park anywhere you like, as long as you don't obstruct other traffic, or block the bus stop.

More info

Pork's Norway trip report.

If you need to get in contact with someone, there is a WW paddling club in Voss called EPK Vest (no web site or e-mail address yet).

There is also a rafting company, situated in Voss city-centre just by the lake. Look for where the sightseeing-seaplanes are taking off from, and you will find it.

There is a kayak school/retail shop run by a company called Voss Ski & Surf.

Locals

When conditions are good you will definitely meet local playboaters and spectators. The farmer/landowner actually thinks we're pretty cool, so let's keep it that way!

Events

Voss extreme week, normally in June.
