Whitewater Parks International (WPI),  designer of Olympic canoe slalom courses, has been contracted to provide professional services for facility development and construction monitoring of the Olympic Canoe Slalom venue, currently being built as part of the new Deodoro Sports Complex “X-Park”.
Whitewater Parks International (WPI),  approved technical consultant of the International Canoe Federation and the Organizing Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games for Rio 2016, has been contracted to provide professional services for facility development and construction monitoring of the Olympic Canoe Slalom venue, currently being built as part of the new Deodoro Sports Complex “X-Park”.

WPI recently concluded its design of the facility in its role with development team responsible for the overall Deodoro masterplan. WPI’s previous Olympic project expertise in particular will now be invaluable as they work with Construtora Queiroz Galvão & Consórcio Complexo Deodoro to ensure that proper technical specifications, as stipulated by the International Olympic Committee, are looked after in the Canoe Slalom venue construction.

WPI has been working diligently with crews on the ground in Rio de Janeiro over the past several weeks, performing site visits, reviewing drawings, and collaborating with project team members to outline crucial next steps in the construction process and to keep the project’s completion on track for the 2016 Games. Pre-determined course configurations established during WPI’s recent testing of a hydraulic scale model of the Rio facility conducted at Czech Technical University in Prague are also helping to shorten project delivery time.

Meanwhile, the International Canoe Federation will be in Brazil this month to check on the progress of the venue and identify any key areas that may need special attention as they prepare for next year’s Olympic Canoe Slalom events. The project has been acknowledged for its design in being able to reduce both capital and operational costs, while at the same time providing for a sustainable commercial Legacy operation after the Games.

“It’s been extremely important work, helping the contractor develop the site, observed WPI Projects Director, John Felton. A facility like this has a number of key equipment components that require a specialized understanding to install properly,” he said. “We’re really pleased with how the project is progressing. It’s exciting to see the venue finally begin to come to life after all our intensive planning over the last year and a half.”
