Topic: What Do You Do For a Living? (Read 1119 times)

Hello All,

Today I've found myself in a bit of an existential crisis. I graduated from CSUMB two years ago and have worked as an IT Technician for two companies since. I always thought I wanted to continue down this path and eventually get a job in Cybersecurity, but lately I find my passion to be more in the marine field. I looked at MBARI's career opportunities, but I'm significantly under-qualified. I think I would like to be apart of some underwater exploration team that maps more of the ocean and discovers new species. MBARI's summer internship opportunities have closed applications for this year, but will reopen next February. Until then, what would be the best way to gain coursework and experience from where I'm at now? I appreciate any and all answers, and would love to hear what you all do for a living and if it even relates to fishing at all.

I’m on the faculty at SJSU, coincidentally in cybersecurity (and machine learning), and Moss Landing Marine Lab might be something to consider. Not sure about admissions and such, but some of my colleagues work closely with people at MLML, and I could put you in contact with them. They could give you the inside scoop…

Just remembered that my cousin works in marine biology, sorta. Based out of FL keys. She has a unique background, with top shelf academic creds. Ivy League/high honors/etc. She practiced corporate transactions and high finance for "only" several years, then burnout, and said screw it all, ima go rebuild coral reefs. Now, she's a sought after speaker, author, and has addressed UN and feds on climate change and ocean health. Spends more time breathing canned air underwater than on land.

Sounds like she's really into the conservation side of things! That's really awesome, I think I see myself more on the adventure and exploration side of the field, but we'll see! I plan on going to the Moss Landing Marine Lab Open House and learning more. Thank you for your response!
