The Cyprus Canoe Federation has hailed the success of a five-day coaching seminar delivered by the International Canoe Federation.

Led by experienced ICF coach Csaba Szanto, the technical seminar in Canoe Sprint ran from February 28 to March 4 in Limasol, Cyprus.

A total of 15 coaches attended the course where they received expert advice on and off the water before undergoing an examination.

The seminar, which is part of the ICF’s global educational program, was held in Cyprus with the aim of developing the skills and knowledge of coaches at Level 1 and 2.

It was made possible thanks to funding from the International Olympic Committee’s Olympic Solidarity program, and a collaboration between the ICF, Cyprus Canoe Federation and Cyprus Olympic Committee.

“We are very happy as everything was excellent,” said Elena Sergi, Administrator for the Cyprus Canoe Federation.

“The most fascinating part was the practical session as we had the opportunity to see the movements in action and not just a description of them.

“We went to Yermasoyia Dam which is where we do our training and everything there was perfect.

“This is very important as we are trying to do more as a National Federation.

“It’s the summer all year round here and it is very easy to get from one town to the other due to the short distances, but we need more people participating, especially children so we are doing whatever we can to help them.”

Toshi Furuya, Chair of the ICF Canoe Sprint Committee, added: “Coaching seminars like this one in Cyprus are fundamental to the development of Canoe Sprint.

“By enhancing the level of coaches, we will in turn ensure athletes in that country will receive the best training methods to improve.”
