Emotions should run high, and the forums are a place where we can rage and argue and still be humans in person!  I hope everyone takes the argument to heart, but not too personally.  Your mom probably loves you.

All that aside, there are those of us with high risk family members or people who are already in the hospital.  I can't diminish the suffering there.  If you think that "YOU" can travel 2 hours in a car, not use gas, not use the bathroom, not touch anything, not leave any trash, well, you are fooling yourself.  You are carrying contagion from one area to another.

There was a high profile rescue /recovery today back east.  I would think those cops, paramedics and Coast Guard members had better things to attend to.

Let's ban fishing to keep everyone safe, at the same time city officials tried to close gunshops while releasing criminals from jail and essentially less enforcement of laws. Not that there was ever any adequate enforcement or justice in the first place. Anyone is simply naive who thinks these same people who's negligence caused a crisis of this degree, will keep you safe from yourselves. Trust your instincts, stay informed, plan movements, limit exposure, wear ppe and don't be stupid. You know what's best for you. If you can fish, fish. Catch a limit and call family or friends. Tell them there's a bag in their mail box with a few fillets. Which in return might have saved a few people from risking exposure at the grocery store. Fishing is a luxury for most of us on here, you would be shocked how many less fortunate families actually rely on resources such as fishing to help survive.

I literally can though... Minus the gas, but my boat's tank is full and that will fill my car multiple times :)

Let's (for a moment) take Fishing out of this.
Now,
We all have certain things we all do to give us inner peace.
Amy has her flowers, Glenn reloads his ammunition,  Antonio cooks, etc. Now, as long as these these are done in their own area without coming in contact with others, we are all doing our part and hopefully things turn out ok.
Now,
Let's say that everyone sees these people at piece, and many decide to hit up the store for supplies or head to a certain area to do the same. Is this now time to ban any of the above mentioned activities .... The answer is NO!
I have been in the fishing buisness my whole life, and along with that I have been involved with the fight to protect our (California) constitutional weight to fish. This fight has been going on way longer than many are even aware. As is the case of modern times, people seem to not want to learn from history. If nothing else, people need to learn what happens to rights once they are lost.
IT WILL NEVER BE A TIME FOR A TOTAL BAN ON OUR RIGHT TO FISH!
It is always a good idea to protect those in danger, but that can be done without taking the above measure.

That’s probably going to delay the Sierra trout opener only. There is broad local support to delay the opener and for a guy like me that gets fired up over things like the government closing fishing despite a constitutional right to fish, that particular exercise of power is not my hill to die on. Let them close it.

I think the department is actually looking on a case by case basis and only shutting down particulate fisheries in narrow circumstances. That is a far cry from Washington state that just blanket banned all fishing and hunting fishing everywhere and I promise I’ll sue California if they do that.

Actions infringing on constitutional rights need to be narrowly tailored to serve a compelling government interest. While I’m not sure that closing Sierra trout fishing or delaying the opener strictly satisfies that test, but it’s close enough for me. Not a bill to die on.

It’s similar to the closures during the drought, using the same rationale.

Shut up and fish
It's certainly not the biggest crime I've ever committed.  Ha!

I get this... but they don’t need to close fishing to stop travel, they just need to enforce the SIP protocols if travel is the issue they want to address. People are traveling up to Tahoe/Truckee with impunity and closing fishing to a person who lives here isn’t the solution to stopping them.

I agree. But the thing is that trout season isn’t even open right now. So there’s nothing to “close” really. They’re just considering ‘postponing’ the season opener. Seems reasonable to me, as long as they clearly define when it will reopen.

What is, though?
The only way I can think of would be a massive increase in law-enforcement staffing to run checkpoints everywhere.
Up here at least, the approach seems to be based on the idea that if everything is closed so there is nothing for a tourist to do, tourists won't come here. It's kinda working, not perfectly but it's a lot easier to make that happen than to create and enforce checkpoints on the highways.
