Corona Diaries #8, Bren Orton (Uk)

Outside, rivers are starting to flow and spring is around the corner, and the sun is shining high. Yet around the world, many are grounded at home and it seems likely others soon will be. Though difficult, let’s repeat it, folks this is THE THING TO DO! It is necessary and worth it!

So, we at Kayak Session decided to take the opportunity to catch up with our friends in the whitewater community and see how they are coping across the globe.

Today we talk with British charger Bren Orton, who is stuck at home in Uk.

How zit Bren, where are you and what is the situation like where you are?

Cheers mate, hope all is well on your end. Currently at my nans house in Warrington. It is what it is, I would much rather be out kayaking and filming with the boys but it’s still nice to get some time with the fam and the dogs.

So the Pubs are closed in the UK…? How crazy!

Haha, wild times. They held off doing it for as long as they could. It was honestly pretty sad to see all the peeps going into town the last night they where open, especially as by that time everyone was aware of how selfish it was to socialize at that point. I think it is the first time I have ever “had a go” at someone on the internet.

How do you spend most of your time?

Last week was hectic with dealing with cancelled plans and projects. This week I hope to get back to doing the things I enjoy; which after kayaking are video editing, reading, training, hanging out with the dogs and listening to my nans stories.

Where did you travel from most recently?

Just came back from Indonesia, I was only mean to be home for a week. Then Trump imposed a travel ban and I couldn’t get to the states so I bought a flight to Austria, where I’m currently renting a room, and then they shut down travel there as well. `

How has Covid-19 impacted your plans for the season? (both personal and professional)

Ha, everything is cancelled. What season? Mostly I am just planning to come out of the lockdown period stronger and smarter than ever and ready to mofkn crush on the river.

How are you maintaining fitness and your sanity? Can you get any exercise or paddle at all?

It has been 11 days, 13 hour and 52 minutes since I last went kayaking, but who’s counting?  Currently I am doing calisthenics four times a week and running three times a week, I have a stack of books to work through, video editing projects and tutorials to do. I’m happiest when I am busy and I guess I am just going to find ways to keep busy.

What are you watching right now? Any (kayak) porn recommendations?

Mate, I just for the first time in my life binge watched something. The Tiger King on Netflix, it is crazy. I am hooked. Asides from that I appreciate EG uploading the old edits, I think some LVM’s from John Grace are going to be posted soon too.

Any words of wisdom for your fellow paddlers across the world?

“Worse things have happened to better people” –  I wrote that down when I was recovering from my brain injury. Positive thoughts for all the poor buggers in countries that have been hit hardest by the virus so far, I hope things get better soon!
