So as a interested future kayaker I took a trip to the ISE show. Enjoyed the show. Checked out some new kayaks. $5K for a new kayak? DANG. Was a bit of sticker shock. Lol. How many guys have or plan on buying the lastest Hobie offering? Nice rigs. But pricey.

There are plenty of kayaks that are really good for a lot less. You don't need to start there, especially if this is your first one or have never fished from one before.

Yes. I plan on picking up a couple used rigs for sure. Can’t wait. I knew some new units ran up in the 2,500-3,000 range, but had no idea they ran up around 5k. Wowsers.

So many hobbies and so little time and $$$.

It’s like any other hobby.  Go to a trade show and there is seemingly no limit to the amount of money you can spend, and there’s always someone ready to take that money in exchange for the shiniest toys in town.

Was there today. The top Hobie barge is $5k+

My first kayak was bought used for under 400 and I found I like kayak fishing enough to upgrade this year.

After having an older yak now I know what I need/want When I spend more

Yeah they are sure getting up there in price! But that is the bass fishing focused ones. Have you priced out a bass boat lately?  :smt044

I’ll echo the advice of finding a decent used one on here or maybe CL. See if you really like it and try to find what you want in a kayak (offshore speed, freshwater stand-ability, lots of gear storage, minimalist?)

Oh and demo demo demo before you buy!

Ive got a Ocean Kayak Scrambler XT, a West Marine Pro Paddle, seat, pvc and inflatable wheel scupper cart, and some attwood fishing rod holders and extensions. I'll sell it all to you for $350.   Many rockfish, halibut, and even a salmon have been caught on this banana boat.   It was my intro to kayak fishing and really was a great boat. Its been hanging in my garage for about 7 months now and i need to get that space back

Thanks for the offer. I have a line on a couple used kayaks. Just haven’t been able to get together with the seller yet. Soon though.
This was in no way meant to be a negative thread. Just an observation from a new guy.

Kayaking skills/knowledge are way more important than how much you spend on a boat, or the brand name you go with. An experienced and educated kayaker can participate in this sport and be safe regardless of the boat, but an inexperienced person can find themselves in quick trouble even in the most expensive boat out there. The ocean doesn’t care how much you spend on a rig, and the lakes will sneak up on you and tell you the same thing.
