I picked up a 6' cast net for this year's herring run.  My 7yr old is SUPER interested in trying it, but I'm thinking it might be a bit big for her.

Have any of you ever tried a 4' net?  Reading different reviews online, the 4' net doesn't have enough weight to get down quickly enough to overcome the short spread of the net (for herring).  Would adding additional weight to the net help?

The nets with plastic covered weights do sink a bit slow in my opinion. A 4’ radius net is perfect if you can throw a nice circle. A 3’ radius net is good for a kid that just want to have fun a still be able to lift up the fish without getting too sore from casting n pulling.
I use a 5’ thrown banana and still manage to haul in some☺️.

I should have been more precise.  My net is 6' diameter (3ft radius).  I was thinking a 4' diameter net would be more manageable for her since she's 4.5ft tall.

I guess the easy answer would be to take her out somewhere and let her practice casting (I could use it as well), but figured I'd ask here first.

If the run is thick and the weights are solid lead then she will be able to pull up some fish on a 4 diameter.

Don't think I have ever seen a 2' radius net, smallest I can recall is 3' but most commonly 4'
Unless you are connected to a custom net weaver.

I was just going by what's on Amazon.  There are a couple that say they're 4' diameter and backed up by the reviews as well.  BUT, being the interwebs, I'm sure there's a high likelihood of some reviewers mistaking "radius" vs "diameter."   :smt003

A bro on the forum is hooking me up with a loaner, so we'll see how it goes!

Mark, I have a 6 or 7ft diameter (can't remember) cast net with EZ Throw ring. You can have it (free) if you're interested. Your kid can throw that thing in no time. PM me if you want it.

Thanks for the offer Eddie, but I'm covered now.  HapaIK is loaning me a small net and Lucky13 is hooking me up as well.

I'm glad you getting the kids into it. When i was a 7 year old my pops took me to a local lake to catch catfish.
Those are one of my favorite memories. When I was a big chovy, well...i got a kayak, and we all know how that went...
I've been seeing more kids at the herring runs. They are having a blast!!!  Cheap family entertainment.  Can't beat that! :smt001

My daughter uses a 3ft radius net and loves it, but she is 13, 12 when she first used it last year:

Might want to try a light rod with sabiki rig, although you would have to cut half of the rig off to be legal in the bay and makes it more manageable for a younger kid.
