According to Mat-Su Borough emergency services director Otto Feather, two men were on board when the canoe overturned. Gary Curtis was on the water with his father, Edgar Curtis, 67, when the canoe tipped. Gary Curtis was taken to a valley hospital Monday evening.

Search and rescue crews, including a dive team, were unable to locate Edgar Curtis after several hours Monday evening. The search effort resumed at 9:00 a.m. Tuesday.

According to Feather, several witnesses saw the canoe capsize from shore and were able to point emergency responders to the area where it happened. However murky water, overcast conditions and wind hampered the search.
