Kayaking programs for beginners offered

OKOBOJI, Iowa -- Mark Foss, a kayaker and certified instructor with the American Canoe Association, is partnering with the Dickinson County Conservation Board to offer kayaking classes.

OKOBOJI, Iowa - Mark Foss, a kayaker and certified instructor with the American Canoe Association, is partnering with the Dickinson County Conservation Board to offer kayaking classes.

Kickstart Your Kayak classes will begin with beginner-level sessions from 9-11 a.m. and from 1-3 p.m. June 13 for ages 10 through adult. Instructors will cover ways to enter and exit kayaks, how to launch the watercraft, forward paddling techniques, maneuvering skills on the water and safety demonstrations.

Intermediate classes will be from 9-11 a.m. and from 1-3 p.m. June 14, and will include instruction on additional safety techniques and more advanced stroke combinations and maneuvers for open water kayaking.
Kayaking Adventures camps for youths are planned from 9-11 a.m. June 20-21 for ages 10-12 and from 9 a.m. to noon June 27-28 for ages 13-18.

Kayaking Adventures includes learning paddling techniques and safety on the first day, with an extended paddle planned on Day 2.
