MEMBERS from the Evesham Children's Kayak Charitable Trust took their sport to new heights after hauling a 40lb kayak to the summit of Mount Snowdon.

The transportation of the 40lb 9R craft 1,085 metres above sea level to the top of the popular Welsh tourist spot saw the charity break records as the team of 13 volunteers braved rough terrain and freezing temperatures.

Their remit was to run with the kayak along the 7.62km Llamberis Path and reach the summit in as quick a time as possible. They reached their goal in 1hr 57 minutes.

It all began with a simple idea at the beginning of 2015 and became more of a reality when Pyranha UK the leading manufacturer and supplier of kayaks and equipment across the country donated a brand new 9R model along with a portage pack carrying system to help the charity in their fundraising efforts.

Over the next few months the volunteers aged between 10 and 50 followed a strict training regime in preparation for the never before tried challenge that would soon be upon them.

The team was watched by walkers and cyclists as they began their upwards trek. On the ascent to the top they were met by steep gradients, uneven ground and loose rocks underfoot and less than two hours later the group reached the summit to face temperatures of minus 5oC.

With the challenge now complete the charity will now focus its efforts on auctioning off the 9R kayak to the highest bidder in order to raise funds to continue its work. It has also received several donations through its website www.tckct.info from followers in support of the Snowdon event.
