Playak News Flash - January 4, 2017
Playak News Flash - January 4, 2017
The world's latest paddling headlines.
Jackson Kayak Time on water, off water besides being part of shaping white water/freestyle community in some way
Jackson Kayak - Paddling was intense this year. I again defended my National Championship and was able to paddle all over the world. I was very excited to be able to help a stack of juniors help reach their potential. This is really a huge focus of mine, I love to be a part of helping the next generation. I headed out to FCC as well as the NOC to help get these little ‘ankle bighters’ to become all that they can. Seeing a bunch move on and partake at the green race is fantastic.
Trash Paddler Fairhaven First
Trash Paddler - My plan was to kick off 2017 with some paddling on tidal waters, but that changed with a weather forecast predicting another day of gusty winds.
Tony Paradise Paddling year in 2016
Tony Paradise - January 1st and the year got off to a good start.  Hopefully a good omen for 2017. 2016 was a less productive year than most and the least productive since 2012 when my paddling was curtailed by a rotator cuff injury and only made 636 kms.  2016 was a year plagued *lol* with home projects and I made just 829 total kilometers for the year. I did 23 convenience paddles out of St. Philips and made 21 evening practices there on Wednesday evenings.
Log of Ibi Paddling in the New Year
Log of Ibi - The trip led to a chance meeting with Anthony Grippando in his new fishing kayak.
Jackson Kayak A Chilly New Year Day Paddle With a 9 Year Old Kayaker
Jackson Kayak - Every year since I was really little, my family has paddled the Shoshone section of the Colorado River on New Years Day.  Last year was my sister,Maddy’s, first trip down when she was 10 and this year I got to do it at 9.
Austin Kayak Interview: Mark Vlaskamp got set for an outdoor adventure last year, find out more
Austin Kayak - A self-proclaimed “Huck Finn wannabe,” Mark Vlaskamp has been paddling a canoe since he was a kid. After serving as YakGear‘s marketing director for four years, he left the position at the beginning to 2016 to spend a significant part of the year on the road. Whether you’re eager for the next big step or looking to incorporate more adventure into your daily life, this interview may be the catalyst for a lifestyle change:
Sea Kayak Stonington Greenlaw Cove
Sea Kayak Stonington - I got out for a short paddle today in Greenlaw Cove, where we're living this winter. It was typical of the trips I've taken lately.
Tony Paradise Reflections of St. Philips Christmas paddle
Tony Paradise - Since 2009 (with one year missed due to weather) a few of us have met at St. Philips for a Christmas paddle or bounce depending on the sea state. 2016 was no exception. There was a dusting of snow on the trees and a fine skim of ice on the water in the harbour. There was a surprising amount of chop as we made our way north but not enough to keep us from making passages through the rocks.
Rapid Magazine Blog Camera Gear Whitewater Paddlers Should Splurge On
Rapid Magazine Blog - Photography is a great hobby to combine with whitewater paddling. River trips and park and plays can take you to some amazing destinations, from a remote northern river to a sweet camping spot adjacent to a burly play wave. While buying new camera gear can be expensive, there are specific items that will transform and improve your photography enough to warrant the purchase. Take care of these pieces and you will be set for high quality whitewater paddling captures for many years.
Fanatic SUP Thomas Oschwald – The Polar Light Expedition
Fanatic SUP - In search of the polar light Fanatic rider Thomas Oschwald paddled alone and without any support on his Ray Air from Tromsø to the North Cape. Icy coldness, long nights and unknown waters challenged him for two weeks until he eventually reached the North Cape at Christmas.
Trash Paddler A Tidal Tug
Trash Paddler - Yesterday's gusty winds were finally gone and my plan to paddle-in the new year upon some tidal waters was back on the front burner.  Of course, today being a legal holiday helped greatly to make it happen.
rvr2rvr What’s New for 2017
rvr2rvr - We’re almost ready to launch our schedule for 2017. It’s going to be a big year for us and we are so excited to hit the road this April. This year we will be offering some new mini clinics.

Newfoundland Kayakoholic 2017 kayaking season has begun
Newfoundland Kayakoholic - Last years kayaking season ended yesterday and many paddlers were a little saddened. But then today the new kayaking season for 2017 started... and all the sad paddlers became happy once again... In celebration of the new season, Tony, Brian and I met at St. Philips this morning for a leisurely paddle up to Topsail Beach. There was a little bit of wind when we started, but not much so things were pretty tame on the way up to Topsail Beach...
