St David’s shine in canoe league

EMMERENTIA – The Gauteng Canoe Union School League for 2016 kicked off to a great start on Emmarentia Dam on 31 January, with local schools excelling in their various age groups during the first races of the season.

St David’s Marist Inanda Preparatory is in the lead thus far in the primary school category with 237 points, far ahead of Laerskool HF Verwoerd from Parys with 178 points. Parkview Junior and The Ridge Preparatory School will need to pick up their game during the rest of the season if they want to catch up, as they were placed 14th and 15th respectively in the league, which is still in its early stages.

Local high schools like Parktown Girls and St David’s Marist Inanda are also stepping up to be strong contenders in the high school category, with Parktown Girls being a mere 12 points behind race leader Hoërskool Parys. Northcliff High School is currently standing in sixth place.

The next event on the league’s calender will take place on 27 February at Germiston Lake and will comprise 200, 500 and 1 000 meter sprints.
