Hey NCKA, Surfbrewer here!

I wanted to let you all know that a buddy and I have started a new store located down near San Luis Obispo, in Los Osos. It's called PRO Kayak Fishing and we are on the way to Montana de Oro State Park. We have a small storefront and an online store. We offer kayaks, kayak rigging parts and accessories, and kayak fishing gear. We just opened our doors in July and have been busy building our inventory, while adding the brands that we believe in and use ourselves. Dan from The Headwater's has been very gracious and has been a great help in expanding our kayak product line.

Unlike Northern California, with its great kayak shops like The Headwaters, Kayak Connection, and Monterey Bay Kayaks among others, our area does not have a retail focused paddle sports store.  Our goal is to offer our local and regional paddlers and anglers a source for the gear and supplies they need. If you are visiting down our way, stop by and say "Hi", we'll let you know what's biting and where the best places to launch are.

We are also offering the NCKA group a 10% discount, just let us know you are from NCKA or if you can't find something in your area that we carry, you can order online. Use Code "NCKA2015" at checkout.

On a separate note, I am also the director of the Estero Kayak Challenge. We held the inaugural event this last June. Just a heads up in case some of you are planning to attend in 2016, the event will be held on Saturday, June 4th. Hope to see a bunch of you there to see Goz defend his title! As it gets closer I will post details. See you all on the water

Cheers,

Surfbrewer (aka Eric)

Right on, Eric! That is very cool. Congrats and good luck!
One other thing I just thought of...if you got a fridge and stocked bait like bloodworms/pileworms, shrimp, sardines, squid...you would get a lot of business from kayak AND shore fishing folks, because there aren't many places to get bait in that area. (I was just reading a long thread about the lack of shore-bait down there on another site--and they all agreed that a shop would kill it if they could stock bloodworms/pileworms/shrimp)

Clearly the owner should just sleep at the store on Friday and Saturday night and install a loud "service please" bell at the door. I mean come on, people need their bait.

I managed a tackle shop in Florida for a few years.  It SUCKED opening at 5am, 6 days a week.  There were plenty of times I partied with the charter captains & we would go straight from the club/bar to the tackle shop ...  repeat the same night.

Best of luck on your new endeavor...  I worked in a tackle shop for a while and yeah bait plenty of bait ..during the Steelie season  we couldnt keep roe cured or non cured ..gone   we didn't stock pile-worms though or carry live either which would have been sweet but the boss wasn't into it
Live bait, depending on what it is & how tough to keep, can be a REAL PITA!  We kept live shrimp & never again will I do THAT!

Thank you all, for the kind words and encouragement! Definitely a labor of love for the sport and lifestyle.

Thanks brother! I agree on the bait, we have been discussing that and have a couple of ideas that we need to get going on.

Right now we are renting some space in my buddies gun store. It is called First Defense Firearms and is at 1099 Los Osos Valley Road, Los Osos, 93402. You literally drive right by it on the way to go fishing at Spooner's Cove.

This setup works good for us to get up and off the ground while still working our full-time jobs. Eventually we aim to move into or own shop. Hopefully sooner than later. Until then though, its guns and fishing! What more do you need!

Cool, that would be great! My partner is actually working with a group to start a collegiate team at Cal Poly to compete in the College Kayak Bass Series.

Here's some fish porn for you guys. Got these from Cambria 2 days ago. The big one was 26" and fought so hard I though maybe I had a yellowtail! Once I got him to the surface it turned out he was hooked in the side. We got them on flylined live macks. Bait is everywhere right now. Cheers

Best of luck with the new venture. It's good to hear that your region will be represented by a kayak fishing specialty store.  :smt006
