14' coastal distance board?
« on: September 01, 2015, 12:04:54 PM »
I have two 12'6 x 28' race boards but am looking for a 14' with more stability for my ocean work outs in So Cal. I only weigh 155lbs so not sure about the board volume. Any suggestions from people who do similar paddling would be appreciated.I do ok on my 12' 6'' Focus Cali when its not to windy but would like something better for windy conditions.

I've been looking at some used 14' race boards in SoCal. There was a really nice used 14' Infinity on CL for under $1K that I checked out, but it was more suited for someone your weight. I don't see it listed anymore. Here is a similar one that just popped up http://orangecounty.craigslist.org/spo/5182642405.html  . Really nice boards.
It's not overhead to me!
8'8" L-41 ST and a whole pile of boards I rarely use.

A coastal distance board that would help with more stability for ocean workouts might be the versatile SIC Bullet 14V2.

This board has a surf nose so it is not designed for flat water speed -> it has a definite DW bias.  The single concave is very stable pounding through slop and chop.  We also have displacement nose boards -> but they do pearl upwind in steep swells.  The surf nose boards float and slice though much better and really revel in nasty conditions.

When the wind and waves pick up we bring out our Bullet and M-14.

Check out SUPATX Lahui Kai 14".  I think the design would be a good match.

At your size there's all kinds of options.  I regularly salivate over some of the deals they've got on used gear down in the OC/SD area.  Along with the one Talldude put up, there's stuff like this.  Someone might want to chime in with an opinion on the Zeedonks, but I sure see a number of them at pretty good prices. http://orangecounty.craigslist.org/spo/5199214020.html

No need to go new.  I paddle almost daily in open-ocean conditions on a 14ft Kings--width is 27-28 and at 205lbs stability is not a problem, so depending on your balance you could probably adjust to something narrower.  I'd find something used for about $1000 and get paddling--going with more of a racing shape will make it fun to take on flatwater too.

I'm a few pounds heavier and my 2014 All Star 14' x 26.5" is an excellent all around coastal cruiser.  The All Stars have always had great stability.  Mine might be for sale soon.

That Infinity I looked at is still there. The board is clean and well cared for. It's a great deal if your under 200#. http://orangecounty.craigslist.org/spo/5155371988.html

I have a 12'6 infinity and its fast in the flat water but more rocky than my Focus in choppy conditions. What I have read so far is the 14's are the same fast but not as stable as other boards the same dimensions.
