5 fun & free Saturday events for kids: Kites and kayaks

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Kids can let the creative juices flow making a kite or designing a city. And there is lots to do at the beach from kayaking and a Dance Party.

Events are free unless otherwise noted.

* Kite Krafting: Saturday, Aug. 29, 1 to 2 p.m.; Clay Pit Ponds Park Preserve, 2351 Veteran's Rd. West, 718-605-3970 ext. 201

Join in and craft biodegradable kites to sail in the winds blowing through the preserve.

* Be A City Hero
: Saturday, Aug. 29, 3:30 p.m.; West New Brighton Library, 976 Castleton Ave., 718-442-1416

This is a hands-on, science workshop series for children. Learn the ways that people change their city's environment. Through exploring water, waste, and energy pollution, kids will discover their own impact on the city as well as ways they can lessen their impact.

* Kayak Staten Island: Saturday, Aug. 29, noon to 3 p.m. South Beach at the end of parking lot #1.

This is the last scheduled event this season for Kayak Staten Island's free program that gives landlubbers, the fearful and the enthusiastic a unique opportunity chance to bob and paddle in the waters off South Beach. Everyone is given a life jacket, paddle, a few instructions and a push off into the bay.

Each turn is 15 minutes to keep things moving, but if you love it, you can get back in line for another try. Wear shoes and clothes that can get wet.

* Binx the Clown: Saturday, Aug. 29, 2 and 4 p.m.; Fantasy Shore Amusement Park

Part of ongoing free summer family entertainment, this week Binx will bring his funny and entertaining show to the Beach Fest.

Enjoy the show and the amusements, including a roller-coaster, Teaside Sea Cups and Baja Buggies.

Please note: Although the entertainment is free, there is a fee to ride the attractions and purchase items from the concession stand.

* Beach Dance Party: Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 28-29; South Beach Boardwalk, near Lily Pond Avenue & Fr. Capodanno Blvd.

Bust a few moves with the kids and enjoy the outdoors at the beach during BeachFest's dance party series.

Breakdancers from the NYC Arts Cypher will get the party started at the South Beach Boardwalk, near Lily Pond Avenue & Fr. Capodanno Blvd.

In addition to live music from 1 to 3 p.m., there will also be volleyball, beach games and free giveaways.
