A Manchester homeowner was taken by surprise Monday morning when he found a man trying to steal his new canoe.Scott Ingle, 42, was leaving for his early morning shift at a Hanover Street supermarket when he noticed something unusual."I happened to see someone with a backpack run across my backyard and head down towards the alleyway," Ingle said. "I happened to go look to see what I was doing and lo and behold he was trying to steal the 14-foot Old Town Canoe out of my basement."Manchester police said John Dufresne, 42, was also trying to break into a truck's tool box at a neighbors home. When Dufresne saw Ingle he tried to run."He came around and he turned around. He came at me and I took him down," Ingle said. "And I preceded to punch him in the head and kick him and knee him. I was fighting for a good 10 minutes, I'm guessing."The commotion in the alley alerted the neighbor's dog Toby who woke his owner."My neighbor came out. I had him hold him down and I called the cops," Ingle said.Both Dufresne and Ingle suffered minor injuries. The brand new $1,400 canoe was also damaged.Ingle said he doesn't regret going after Dufresne."If he came back and did it again, I'd do it all over again," Ingle said. "You're not going to steal from me."Dufresne was charged with burglary and appeared for his arraignment Monday morning.
