Guys,

Need some advice with dealing with sea sickness. I want something that really works even if it cost $100. so far the OTC sea sickness pills at Walgreen don't really help. how do you guys deal with sea sickness? I know some have higher tolerance than others. My buddies really have low tolerance for sea sickness. appreciate any suggestions/recommendation.

Joe

I just buy the cheap house brand dremamine. Has more active ingrediant then the name brand.   I tried going with and without taking it.  I can only last a few hours without taking it.  Taking it get me a bit light headed but never too sick and vomit. If I dont take it.  Ill comit stomach acid and coffee, since i dont eat breakfast.

Maybe try a non name brand with more active ingrediant.  5 bucks for a pack of 20.  Also tie all your rigs prior and try not to look down.  Jist look strait to the bow of your yak and to the horizion.  Try to fave the swell.

For some people the Dramamine works and for others the Bonine works.  You will have to experiment to see what works for you.  I think  you're supposed to take them the night before you go out.  Scopace works sweet, but you need a prescription.  If you go out enough, you might just get your sea legs and not need anything!

We taken Dramamine but maybe we are taking it wrong. directions on packet says 1 hour before activity. I had no problems but they do. 3 times we had to cut short good fishing trips. maybe ocean kayaking isn't for them.

There are a couple of things that increase the likelihood of getting seasick; Lack of Sleep & Alcohol are the 2 main contributors.

Avoiding these 2 things will decrease your chances of getting seasick; but Scopace will shut it down if you can get your hands on some.... But the main key, is to take it at least an hour before you get on the water; if you take it on the water, "fogetaboutit", it wont work!

The difference between Scopace and Dramamine, Dramamine gives you cotton mouth and makes you drowsy, Scopoce dont..

I get cotton mouth with Scopace sometimes. I guess it depends on whoever pharmacist compound it cause I get it sometimes and sometimes don't. Another thing I get is acid from taking Scopace. That's why I bring Pepcid in case.

If you can get a hold of Scopace, it's a wonderful drug but it needs to be compounded since they don't make it any more. Bonine (over the counter) would be my 2nd choice. You'll just have to experiment whichever works for you better.

There are thousands of articles.

As we all had, I heard bad things about dramamine and bonine, so I tried acupressure wristband and several herbal solutions - hard to say if they helped though. Studies show mixed results for these and compare to placebo, but also say that placebo has a great effect ;)

What I found useful so far:
- don't drink much night before and get as much sleep
- light breakfast with nothing smokey or fried (no sausages, eggs, etc.)
- comfortable clothes (wetsuit makes it worse for me, I'm often keeping top off or unbuttoned)
- look ahead / at horizon, don't look back, tie rigs, etc.
- sit straight
- chewing gum (!), deep breath
- calm weather helps ;)
- catch some fish!! While focusing on unhooking can get it worse, excitement will fix it ;) And if I'm not excited catching fish it's time to go home ;)

I've been out 7 times so far, always in calm-ish weather, only 2 times I have not been seasick, likely b/c of I'm getting used and learning what does not work, and maybe b/c of calmer weather.

The patch is the only thing that works for me. I've tried all the pills and they do nothing for me. I don't drink much, get plenty of rest and all that, but I'll be brutally sick with anything but the patch. I'm lucky because I don't get seasick from a kayak though!

Get a prescription for oral scopalamine from your doctor take it to a compounding pharmacist and have him make gelcaps or gummies. They work within 30-45 minutes and wear off in 6hrs.
Scopace was the commercial pill form of scopalamine but it was taken off the market a couple years ago. Now you have to have it made to order.

Scopace works well for me, but it's a prescription medication, and expensive. If taken in the form of a transdermal patch, it works for three days- not necessary for a single day on the water.

The same medication is available in tablet form, but you can't buy it here in the states. You can, however mail order it from the UK or Australia. Look for a motion sickness medication called kwell. If you want, you can have a compounding pharmacy make some pills for you locally- but you still need a scrip.

Pm me if you need more info

The Scope patch works for me but it does have side effects for some people - blurred vision, dry mouth. For me, it also makes me have trouble speaking (more than usual!). The effect is very slight but I sometimes notice some struggle putting words together.

If I only fish one day, I take off the patch & save it for next time. Just put it back on the plastic film.
Wash your hands after handling the stuff.
Catch & Repeat

I have a script for promethazine. Doc said it was very drowsy. Been using scop and Bonine (meclazine). Is the promethazine as drowsy as the rumor? I have a dream to do some long range stuff, but won't until I get meds sorted out. Too much $ to sleep through.
