Academy Rods

Post by Mr. B »

Ok quick question as I don't buy rods from Academy or just haven't since I have had my rods and reels for some time and have purchased more hi end stuff. But I need to get two rods to pair up with a couple of reels to keep at a camp for when I am down visiting and fishing. Probably looking at something like Shimano Sahara's to pair up with the rods. Looking for advice from folks who have purchased and used rods from Academy on what would be some good economic all purpose rods for trout and reds. Currently using Shimano Stradics

Spin Cast.

They will be used either wading or kayak.

Much appreciative of any feedback.

I'm guessing we are talking about the tournament choice brand?
Not a big fan. The Green one is too flimsy for my liking. They Grey one is a little better.
For 10 bucks, you really can't go wrong, i guess. Academy does guarantee these products, so that's a plus.
I personally would fork out the 40 dollars for an ugly stik.

I am ok with spending $50 - $100 on the rods. I saw the ugly sticks but have never used them before.

In that price range a Falcon coastal would be your best bet

Lew's Hero series are nice too as are the Okuma Trio Reels that Academy has on closeout now, those Okumas can take a beating.

I have purchased Academy's own H20 Express Ethos Inshore 6'8 MF rod and can assure it works well, I use it on every trip I have taken and it is a great rod.

Your Academy must be different than mine. Mine has $400 rods in there. For cheap rods that I would call "buddy rods" incase of taking a newb out, I like the H2O Express Inshore rod. It's $59 new and comes on sale for $39 occasionally. Put a Shimano Sienna 2500 on it for $29 more and you're good to go.

2x on this.

This has been my backup/buddy rod on every trip. It has a nice, short butt, so it's great in the yak and wading. I also have an UglyStik as a backup to that backup, but it rarely sees the light of day since I like the Academy twig a lot better.

I picked up a Castaway 6'6" spinning rod as a rod for my fiance when she chooses to fish (or a guest set up). Paired it with a Penn Battle for a sweet set up that was under $200. I think the rod was 69.99. Ill probably be using it to wade the surf as well.

Use Falcon Coastal XG 7' 6'. My Academy doesn't carry them. On sale at Bass Pro or Cabela's.

They are not high end Shimanos by any means but Okuma reels are a good value IMHO.
