SIMO build
« on: April 26, 2015, 08:38:27 PM »
This will be a longer term project so I'll post updates every few weeks.

I've made about 12 surfboards, all with various timber veneers, carbon fibre and innegra. Last couple of boards have been variations of Mini-Simmons and Tomo inspired boards from 5' to 5'4". They go unreal.

I usually train and race on race boards to keep fit for surfing and have not tried a SUP surfboard, preferring a long board on small days. But thought I'd jump in the deep end with a 7' Simmons-Tomo inspired SUP.

The other first is trying out the Gearbox fin system.

Here's the plan....

7' x 28", and the plan says about 99 litres, but I've chickened out on the shaping and kept it about 106 at this stage. I weigh and measure everything that goes into a board to get a close approximation to actual volume.

This will be for waves in the knee to chest high range, then it's onto the short boards.

And forgot ...I'm 5'8" and 155 pound, so this will have plenty of volume for my size - I haven't been on any SUP smaller than about 180 litres, but my high performance surfboards are in the 24 to 27 litre range, so should be good on this.

I like to hot wire in the rail bands, to keep them even, and makes way less mess than planer...

The core is 1.5# construction grade EPS, with 1.8# XPS on the rails to provide a water resistant edge where the damage happens. I put the nose and tail blocks on first with marine grade two part 5 minute epoxy, then the rails are vacuum bagged on with epoxy resin.

So far Gearbox is a great system. The main jig can be used to route a bigger slot for high density foam inserts, as well as a template for the higher density foam.

Insert for leg rope plug give a bit more strength, and protects against water leakage..

You did it right.  Looks great. Let us know how she rides.
It's not overhead to me!
8'8" L-41 ST and a whole pile of boards I rarely use.

Looks really cool Karl. Could you share more picture, description and or plans for your rail band hot wire.

Keep the pictures of progress coming.

Thanks.

Wont the XPS gasses expand and delam?  Ditto on the rail tool, looks great.  I make one for each band, but yours looks adjustable.  Way cool..  I just built a similar board and love it..

Nice clean work on the shape man. I love the foam work too.

Over on swaylocks tons of guys use xps with no issues and with a vented eps board I'm sure it's fine. Any gas should be able to move around easily.

The foam fin insert templates make that so easy. Really cool.
