best combo reels and rods for kayak fishing.

Post by jtown102 »

What to see what the experts Prefer for brand reels and rods. Length of rods and action. Doesn't matter spinning or casting.

That question was asked recently on the new to Fishing Forum. You didn't say what kind of fishing you are wanting to do but I believe the answers there will help you. 8)

I'll play.
I have some really high-mileage Penn spinning reels, bought in the 80s. You can ride them hard and put them away wet.
I've caught 30" redfish even on the UL 4200SS.
Here my daughter is catching honking sheepshead on the flats using the same little reel - if you've ever caught sheepshead on they flats, they want to get back to the channel

Her rod is a Falcon open hook special.
You'd have a very hard time beating Penn/Falcon for a long-life rod and reel combo.

My baitcasters? Well, I'm still fishing my Lew's from the 80s, and don't expect to ever replace them.

I like longer rods for blind-cast drift-fishing from a kayak. For both spinning and bait, I go to Lamiglas steelhead rods in 8-1/2' and medium-light to medium-heavy to match the hardware I'll be throwing. The longer rods help you keep your lure above the grass and easily go around the boat with a big fish.

Lately, I've become a fan of Tica spinning reels. Their high-grade reels have computer-balanced flyer, ball bearings even in the handle, on/off anti-reverse, quality drag designs, and perform favorably next to reels costing 3 times their price. (These reels are also rebadged and sold as other "US" brands)
This little UL Cetus SS500 I use for salt XUL on a Japanese tetra rod - 3lb test - last summer in Palm Harbor canals, I was sight-fishing 20" and 22" specs over submerged lights at night - it was a hoot.

My latest combo is a Tica Libra SX 3000 with a Lami G1307- sitting down, it will throw a 1/4-oz jighead out of sight
