Doesn't seem much different than a deer hunter using trail cam in preseason to see what deer are around and search for the biggest/best deer the want to hunt when season comes around.

I didn't realize until reading this forum that we can't take abs before 8 a.m., though I did answer that online survey. Am I missing something- what difference does it make what time of day abalone are taken? Are they supposed to be easier to find or easier to get off early in the morning? Seems harder in lower light? What is the point of this new reg?

I think that is the best explanation I've heard yet for the 8:00 time.

Live your life, the way you want to be remembered. Don't have any regrets, we only get this one dance to make it count. Start at your eulogy, and work backwards.

Population control, they want less rock pickers and more potential drowning :smt010
My biggest worry is that my wife(when I'm dead)will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it

Hmm, I looked at a couple months worth and it looks like about half are before 8. Some of the minus tides are before sunrise.

Is that DFW's rationale?

From what I understand, that was the driving factor in the time change, as well as easier for DFG to enforce/see people out taking abs.

Nailed it with the above:

for DFG to enforce/see people out taking abs. yes.

Hmm, I looked at a couple months worth and it looks like about half are before 8. Some of the minus tides are before sunrise.
Is that DFW's rationale?
Yes, but still allow opportunity knowing it was not the best opportunity. Idea was to reduce impact and potential catch.
And last, most seem to be forgetting or not have mentioned or do not know is  the start time change to 8am was yet another "potential" way to meet the ARMP reduction requirement of 25% back in 2013 adoption package made for the 2014 abalone season. At the time, if I recall correctly, changing the start time, all the while knowing it would affect rocking the most, the "potential" reduction estimate was between 5% to 15%.
I do believe for the 2014 season that potential has been made and may have exceeded. However the DFW will use a three year cycle to determine if that reduction is so or not.

In other words, the DFW wants us to buy a license, but not actually be successful.
