Hi everyone!

Excited to report that I finally got my first kayak. It's on the older side but I'm cool with that. I figure it's my first one and will beat it up. Plus if I really do like yaking I'll upgrade.

It's an Ocean Kayak Scrambler XT.

Didn't come with a paddle and I'm going to use it for fishing so I was hoping people could help me chose a paddle. I don't care for it to be high end. Good, cheapie will do for now.

Any suggestions out there on length, brand and model for fishing?

Thanks in advance!

Daniel

Welcome to kayak fishing Daniel.  This site will provide you lots of good info from some very informed people.  For a good, less expensive paddle try a Day Tripper...$40 from Amazon and pretty well made for the price.  Google "correct paddle length" for the proper sizing.  And welcome to NCKA.

Sam, thanks again for the info.

I ended up doing some research and watched quite a few yt vids to help make a determination.

I'm 6' and the kayak is kinda wide so I ended up getting a 230-240cm (extendable) paddle.

As I researched I also learned that I would likely get fatigue with the cheaper models.  Not only due to weight, but also depending on water and wind conditions.  For example, I fish in capitola pretty often and the waters can get somewhat cold there, but I'm sure once I start venturing out, I'll be hitting places like HMB and the like as well.  Their waters are a bit colder and so having an aluminum shaft will make my hands that much colder which then fatigues my hands when fighting or just holding my fishing rod.

After looking at a bunch of places, I decided to go with this one here:
http://www.mpgear.com/149850/seattle-sports-seawhisper-230-240-crbn-paddle

Least expensive I could find and the company gives you a 10% off coupon for registering to their newsletter.  Free shipping and no tax.

Not too bad in my opinion, but then again I'm new to this thang.  For all I know it could be crap. Haha

Let me know what you think.

Right on man, welcome to the site! The Scrambler XT is a fine yak; I've owned a couple over the years and really enjoyed paddling them. Sometimes I wish I still had one because my 2 current yaks are so dang heavy!
That paddle looks like a good deal to me! I haven't seen one in person or used one but the description & specs sound perfect. At 230-240 it might be on the long end of the spectrum but it'll be more versatile if you ever buy a bigger/wider yak too.  I honestly hadn't even considered the effect an aluminum shaft may have on my hands getting cold...but it makes sense! If I'm fishing in cold weather or fishing for rockies/lings then I wear gloves (to stay warm or save my thumb from the dozens of rockies that I may lip & release).

thanks man!

yeah, i'm not sure.  i'm prob thinking too much about the whole cold hands deal...?  and i prob would wear gloves too.  we'll see.

i chose to go for the longer version because everything i read said a 6' person with a 26" wide boat would need the 230cm length.  the 21-220 would have been a little less i think.  oh well.  i'll give it a go and if it doesnt work out someone will get a great deal. :)

this will also be my rock/ling yak...and hopefully halibut/wsb too! haha

pretty stoked to get on the water asap!

Welcome!

You'll love that Scrambler XT. I still get some good use out of mine and it's at least 7-10 years old (I'm second owner).

Here's a fatty in my Scrambler seat for a little inspiration :)

That's a nice fish!

What waters was that caught out of?

Yeah this scrambler is pretty beat but it'll do its job for now.

Thanks! That one was from Muir Beach on the Marin coast.

This is the seat in that pic:

Super comfy... There are cheaper ones out there, but your ass and back will thank you...

Thx man. Will check them out.

Right now it basically has a backrest with no cushion for my butt. That's not gonna fly!
