Silverfish Glasses
« on: February 01, 2015, 05:01:41 AM »
Just a quick note to pass along that I purchased a prescription set of Silverfish sunglasses at the beginning of last season (S Rat 2 model) and I have been EXTREMELY impressed with the product.  A bit pricey, but man do they make being on the water nice!!!  I've lost several a contact len's overtime....but no longer.  I've take quite a few face plants with the glasses on and they have never dislodged or fallen off.  I think this model is pretty stylish so even wear them to outdoor events.  For me (near sighted) they've been outstanding!

Do yourself a HUGE favor and look into them if you've been shedding your eyeglasses/contacts before hitting the water.  I purchased the gray polarized for a modest bump up to my prescription and I'm gonna purchase a "transitions" pair before the spring for cloudy days.

Check em out at www.silverfish.com

I had a pair and they lasted way longer than my prescription - maybe 6 yrs plus.  Wore them all the time paddling and the polarized lens were great.  My optometrist recommended some protective coating on the lens that started coming off at around year three, so I'd stay away from that option and just take better care washing and storing them.

Just a GREAT product....I have never used the extra nose pieces they send with the glasses.  Just a splash of anti-fog/rain droplet preventer and whaaaaallllaaa !  So NICE!!!!!!

That anti-droplet stuff looks like the ticket.  Might have to try.
Not sure I dig the styling, though.  This is more my speed:

Spookini:  Initially, I wasn't crazy about the nose-area of the glasses but they are easily detachable (the glasses come with a couple of different pieces to accommodate different bridge sizes.  I never use the pieces which (I think) make the glasses quite stylish.  Here's  a pic (with out the strap which makes the glasses pretty darn nice for non-surf times.

i'm a little unclear: are you using the pieces in the surf or no? and if not, how does that impact fogging, etc., as it's my understanding that the bridge bits are there to allow for better air circulation and thus less fog.

and, which model is that?  looks like road trip but it might be rat.

Linter:  No, I don't even use the nose pieces in the surf.  I've had zero problem with fogging without the pieces provided I apply spray/buff before going out.  Apparently, the nose pieces are supposed to provide some separation between lens and face to allow air flow (to minimize fogging), but again, I've had zero fogging problem with wearing the glasses in the surf as shown in my picture (with strap).  Super comfy and no issues!

Model I have (and in pic) is definitely the S Rat 2 with my prescription.

eastbound,

I've taken plenty of face plants and never had them so much as slip.  The adjustable strap is key as it keeps them super snug while being comfortable.  We all have different shaped faces and this particular model works amazingly well for me.  You can always use some thin line between the strap and your wetsuit zipper as an extra safety precaution. I suspect there's some additional info/testimony on the web about them not coming off if you dig deeper.

thanks for the info.  the rat's the best looking of the bunch or at least the most normal.  if i did this, i'd have to spring for transition lenses -- i do dawn patrol a lot and am usually in the water when it's still dark out -- but i don't think the transitions can be polarized.  guess i'll write silverfish and see.

or maybe i should order clear and see if i can't rig up a pair of polarized clips ons so they won't fly off.

Sometimes product looks great online, but you never know til you try it for yourself.

For example, I've been told these glasses make my head look flat.  :o

Linter: my pair (in pic) is just polarized prescription.....for the very reason you highlight, I'm gonna get a second pair (transitions)...that (early morning) and cloudy days!  8)

you can get both transitions and polarized...just more expensive.  clip on shades will be gone in one wipe out!   :'(

Ok, now you're starting to blur the lines b/w eye protection and..  UV protection?
