A search and rescue party looking for a German kayaker believed to be in deep water south of Oamaru found him on dry land.
Acting Sergeant Carl Pedersen, of Oamaru, said a man called police after seeing a yellow kayak in ‘‘big swells'' about 1km from the beach at All Day Bay, near Kakanui, about 6.30pm yesterday.
The man called police after losing sight of the kayaker.
A fishing boat from Oamaru and a helicopter from Dunedin were called to search for the paddler.
The fishing boat crew found the 51-year-old at a campsite nearby.
