Topanga - before the storm
« on: December 11, 2014, 12:45:16 PM »
Nice morning session before work. Waist to chest and super fun.

Note, this was at the beach break South of the point. Point was packed, guy paddled out on a SUP, took the next set wave, fell and then blocked the takeoff for the next 4 waves.

Yes, he was shouted out of the water, yes, he deserved it. I caught one on every set all by myself, all I could get, alone.

I waved him over to me but he slunk off alone. I've been there. ;)

Great day, offshore winds and that beautiful blue grey water that comes with stormy skies. So how about we focus on that?

Coffee in the parking lot many laughs and someone got heli lifted off pch by the county fire. It was not me and for that, and the waves, I'm grateful.

Stopped at Shaper's Supply for more epoxy and took work calls all the way home. I love LA.

Good call. Sounds like you went at the right time. While you were probably having coffee in the parking lot, I went out at Sunset (next break just south of Topanga, for the out of towners) and basically learned how to knee surf and then prone surf on my SUP. Very bumpy, lots of water moving and wind not helping. But I stayed out there knowing that I could be out of the water for a week due to the storm.

Yeah it's gonna get nutty. Samo, you need to hit that South beach break at Topanga on a decent tide/swell with that fanatic. You'd have a ball.

Hey I would like to hook up with you guys someday at Topanga. I SUP there, and at Sunset, regularly during the winter. Unfortunately I missed yesterday, due to being sick with a stupid cold! I wouldn't have minded so much if the cold came a few days later, since I wouldn't be going out anyway during, and for a few days after, this coming storm.

I have been a local at Topanga since the 1960's and now I SUP the cove, what you call the beachbreak. Too bad about the clueless SUPer who went out at the point. I am surprised he was allowed to even get one wave, the proners are pretty strict about that. I only venture out at the point if there are fewer than three or four surfers out. Of course that means there isn't much surf then.

Yeah I've been scoping out that spot out lately. On the last swell saw many unridden waves in that cove. Is that a low tide spot like Sunset?

Laszlo I'll PM you.

Oh man, love to hang and thanks for giving me the name of that break.

Yeah, Samo, it's pretty good low to mid. If it's big it'll break at high tide but then it is weird.

Today was my first shot at this swell, between my cold and then the storm and the toxic residue. I figured 48 hours was a reasonable wait after the rains. I checked out both Topanga and Sunset and decided to go out at Sunset. Glad I made that call, Sunset was as good as I've ever seen it. Couple of feet overhead on the sets, and several peaks to choose between. Virtually no crowds to speak of.

I was out at Sunset today also. Managed to stay dry most of the session until that rogue outside wave took everyone out. Fingers crossed on toxic residue. Gonna give it another run tomorrow morning around 10am.

Did Topanga today at low tide. The cove was breaking nicely, maybe one good wave for every ten on the point, but then it was uncrowded and sweet. Two other sweepers, but not both at the same time.

Nice, I hit a semi-secret spot up North. Didn't catch many, but it was chest high with an amazing  rogue that was well overhead.
