Two kayakers are now safe and sound thanks to rescue efforts by U.S. Coast Guard officials and Maui Fire Department’s Ocean Safety crews.

On Monday afternoon, the pair had become stranded on the Molokini Crater. Strong winds and three foot swells pushed them onto the rocks.

Fortunately, the kayakers wore lifejackets. They were able to climb to safety and call 911 for assistance.

After the Maui Fire Department was alerted of their plight, officials contacted staffers at the Sector Honolulu Command Center.

A jet ski from Ocean Safety, along with a 45-foot long Response Boat-Medium crew from Station Maui, hit the waters to locate and help the stranded kayakers.

About 25 minutes after the fire department learned about the boaters, the Ocean Safety jet ski arrived at their location and transported the pair to the Coast Guard vessel.

Once they were safely on the boat, the kayakers were taken to Maui. Neither individual was injured.

Coast Guard officials are using the incident to stress the importance of checking weather conditions before getting into the water, along with wearing and carrying proper safety gear.
