Trailer build advice/input

Post by frazior »

Ok, Just getting started.

Got my kayaks 1. Jackson Big Tuna 2. Jackson Cuda14 3. Jackson Cuda 12. Started out putting them on J style racks on my F150. Found that works good when pulling my travel trailer but not very friendly when the wife and kid just want to run out to the lake for a couple of hours....... Spending more time loading than paddling......

Got a good deal on a 4x6 utlility traler (Carry On brand) Plan on building it out much like MattD did (see picture below) with unistrut and strapping and put the Cudas on the bottom and the Tuna in the middle on top. however, I am really liking the idea of using PVC for the bunks and this is where I need some guidance. Should I go with 2' schedule 40, schedule 80 or bump it up to 3'?

Yes, I have searched the forum but only finding bits here and there. Thanks in advance and yes, I stole the image from MattDs post......

I'd go unitsrut route. I still need to attach PVC or trailer.

IV done it with PVC ..didn't like the flex on it.

Ah, maybe I should clarify. I absolutely plan on going with unistrut for the frame. I am looking for input on the bunks for the kayaks.

I also have a 4x6 carry on brand trailer. This may not be what you are looking for, but I highly recommend the Thule xsporter. You can find them cheap on Craigslist sometimes. They are a very nice, ready made rack system that fit excellent on the trailer.

Here is mine.

Oh, and I forgot....you're going to need a longer tongue, depending on how long your kayak is. I picked up a 9 ft piece of 2x3 steel and it works great. It gives me plenty of room to open the tailgate of my truck and it makes backing the trailer very easy.

Go with wood and padded. Lots of possibilities

One go with Malone saddle up pros. That's what I use

That design worked okay, but I would highly recommend connecting the front and rear frames with Unistrut to better secure the entire setup. The X straping was not sufficient enough to prevent twisting and I broke numerous brackets used to secure the carpeted bunks to the Unistrut. I used carpeted bunks before upgrading to 1" square tube cross bars and adjustable hull cradles. The thing I learned the most, be ready to change your mind and adapt when things don't work as planned or you see some other cool trailer idea on TKF!
Good luck with your project.

Thanks all.

Already got a 10 foot section of 2x3 to extend the tounge.

MattD, I was toying with the idea of using unistrut for X braces on the sides but your idea of lateral pieces to tie the front to the back may be better. One other idea I have is to move the lights higher up to keep them from dragging when you lift the tongue and move them more into the line of sight of other cars......

Definitely keeping an open mind on the build out.
